Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
BlogsForTerri update AND compilations
The Silence Of The Trolls
One year ago today, Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube was pulled. Blogs for Terri is rounding up people’s memorable posts and current posts to remember the time last year when she was starved to death.
Honestly, I’m still sick, bitter from the whole thing, and I don’t want to open up old wounds. I’ll just post the links to a couple things I wrote that speak to the larger issue–specifically, how we look at the disabled, and generally, the value of human life in all its forms.
Note: trolling on this post will be nuked. I’m still pissed about the nasty rhetoric from a year ago, and I will not change my mind.
Terry Schiavo Hospital Gown On Ebay! With pictures!
The auction was yanked after 15 minutes. I wonder how Mike’s little PAC fundraising is going?
The choicest part of the whole thing, according to BKP:
Own this one-of-a-kind piece of history. I purchased this from a person who worked at the Hospice Center in Pinellas Park, Florida. The winner of this auction will also receive the actual feeding tube that was Terry’s lifeline before her final days. No matter how you feel about this case, you cannot deny that this is an important part of history.
(No, I have no clue if Michael Schiavo was the seller, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all. Not a bit. Speculation is what the blogosphere’s all about, no?)
I ran into somebody getting upset the other day about somebody else posting a picture of Howard Dean in front of a Nazi flag with the trademark mustache. Seems it’s not too far off of an idea.
Jason Smith at Generation Why? points out how Michael Schiavo is using the memory of his dead wife to raise money for Democrats.
WHORING MONEY BY EXPLOITING DEAD RELATIVES!!! WHAT A F***********ING SHOCKER!!!
And you wonder why this country keeps voting Righter and Christianer?
Also, Ace beats around the bush, equivocating the new PAC:
Because you know, just days before she slipped into a coma, Terri Schiavo told Michael, “If I should be in a vegative state, I want you to pull the plug on me, and then use my name to raise money to protect every woman’s right to have the plug pulled on them by a conflict-of-interest-riddled de facto ex-husband. And, while you’re at it, make sure you dip your own beak, too.”
And if you think you’re getting a link to the PAC, you’ve been smoking what Beulah Mae’s been making from the stuff she got at the Walmarts pharmacy. Mark down my use of this, you ain’t gonna see it much:
F.E.T.E.
Okay here’s the confession that will not make me very popular, but I was never very popular to begin with: I hated being part of the Terri Schiavo “blog- a- thon” at the end.
I don’t want to name names but some people hijacked a wonderful purposed group and created a screaming parade of psychotic idiots who were emotional and crazed and blind to the law. And honestly, I was one of them. I backed off when someone asked me, what do you want them to do, storm the nursing home and kidnap her like they did Elian Gonzalez…oh…and something sunk in my heart because I knew I was losing a battle.
Please don’t take this as a criticism toward Blogs for Terri as a blog or even as a group, I just feel that it got a bit “crazy” toward the end. Sometimes when someone believes something so much they become zealous and blind to anything but their end goal, usually when that happens, they fail to change minds because people just turn off. Are you surprised to hear me say this? Maybe.
I hated the criticism toward our president and the governor of Florida because they refused to “stretch” the laws established to save Terri, especially because if Jeb Bush had not taken the steps long before, she would have died years ago. They had done what they could.
I also hated with a passion the martyrdom that Terri was given because her passing fell around Easter time. There is still an idiotic ignorant picture of Terri superimposed on Jesus looking up as though they are both saints and martyrs and sacrificial lambs floating around the internet. No. Terri was just a poor woman who needed a voice not a saint, certainly not a savior.
Why did I keep blogging so long for Terri’s cause? Because my original intent to give Terri’s life worth, to give her a voice was still worthwhile. We were all trying to do the right thing by her and her family because it had become such a public thing. And yes, we may have gone overboard.
But The Gun-Toting Liberal says now with the autopsy results showing indeed that Terri’s brain was atrophied and beyond repair that he was wrong to fight for Terri. Well I disagree. I still feel we were right. Why? Because for the years and years that Terri was alive after her accident, she never received the testing required to determine if she were brain dead. Terri never once received an MRI that renowned neurologists recommended she receive to confirm her diagnosis. There were too many questions still unanswered.
How do we now know for sure that Terri was a vegetable? Because some doctor took her corpse, pierced her skin, sawed through her skull and looked at her brain. That’s the only way we know now, why couldn’t we have known before she was sentenced to death?
Yes, we were zealous about saving her life, but they were zealous about killing her. Certainly, there is no shame in erring on the side of life. No one should die because of court order. No government should be allowed to take a life, no person should be allowed to take a life. And if you disagree, I certainly hope that you will not be the one making my medical decisions. I will stand firm that only God can give life and only God can take it.

[By Jody, WHO IS NOT BETH. BETH IS ON BLOGCATION - The Supervisor]
Both sides of the Terri Schiavo controversy are all a’twitter about the release of Terri Schiavo’s autopsy report.
Read those last two words again. Autopsy report.
Whether you think the report answers all the questions surrounding the case, or whether you think that it only brings up more questions, what does it matter?
Terri Schiavo is dead.
These questions could have been answered when she was alive. She’s not, and they weren’t.
Terri’s family was more than willing to take her, and provide for her, no matter what her condition. Nothing in the report changes that. Michael Schiavo and George Felos wanted her to die, nothing in this report changes that, either.
To the those on either side who are standing atop Terri’s corpse, claiming vindication, you should be ashamed of yourselves, you are profiting from the death of an innocent.
“Trip: I ain’t fightin’ this war for you, sir.
Colonel Robert G. Shaw: I see.
Trip: I mean, what’s the point? Ain’t nobody gonna win. It’s just gonna go on and on.
Colonel Robert G. Shaw: Can’t go on forever.
Trip: Yeah, but ain’t nobody gonna win, sir.
Colonel Robert G. Shaw: Somebody’s gonna win.
Trip: Who? I mean, you get to go on back to Boston, big house and all that. What about us? What do we get?
Colonel Robert G. Shaw: Well, you won’t get anything if we lose.
Colonel Robert G. Shaw: So what do you want to do?
Trip: Don’t know, sir.
Colonel Robert G. Shaw: It stinks, I suppose.
Trip: Yeah, It stinks bad. And we all covered up in it too. Ain’t nobody clean. Be nice to get clean, though.
“It is a poverty that a child must die, so that you may live as you wish” - Mother Teresa.
Don’t be a victim of laws that allow judges to decide what they (or anyone else) believe your wishes would be if you were to become incapacitated. ONLY YOU know for sure. This is your reminder:
An advance directive is your life on your terms. Whether you’re 18 or 80, documenting your wishes today means your family won’t have to make heart-wrenching decisions later.
To help patients, families and the hospitals that serve them, the American Hospital Association (AHA), with the cooperation of other organizations, has compiled key resources to enhance educational efforts and raise awareness around this important issue.
We encourage everyone to talk with their family, their friends, their doctor. Know the options. Decide what’s right for you. And then put it in writing.
Do the research, and know the difference in “life sustaining measures.” Remember, Stephen Hawking himself has a feeding tube and a ventilator!
For those who are against the concept of living wills/advance directives:
Making your wishes known does NOT mean you support euthanasia; it is simply protecting your wishes under the laws that exist. I am vehemently pro-life, but I do have an advance directive. Look at it this way: abortion is legal, but you have the right to refuse having one!
You can download your state’s advance directive documents and instructions HERE.
DJ Drummond at Polipundit (and Stolen Thunder) has posted a summary of some legal papers released by the University of Miami:
Anyone looking for proof to support either the validity or criminality of anyone in the case will be disappointed, as these documents do not provide anything a court would accept as proof. However, the 45 pages in the report do illuminate the debate, and present interesting points of reference, and some confirmation of essential facts in the background of the case. The context presented by these facts is chilling.
I won’t ever quit arguing against the creeping culture of death and creepy medical “ethicists,” but I think I’m probably going to have to say nothing more for now about the Mae Magouirk story (link to Wizbang). It’s basically turned into a big
W T F
Here’s what I think, after pondering this for a bit:
First, check out this theory (JUST a theory and there are a bunch of holes in it, but it could be close to the truth) - a comment from “TomT” at the Commissar’s.
I think it goes like this: a) the granddaughter is basically an asshole control freak who declared “I’m in charge here”, b) she’s an idiot who isn’t competent herself enough to make decisions properly or even morally, c) Ken Mullinax says WTF, no way is she letting Granny die without heart treatment, and d) he lets the story propagate that Mae has had a feeding tube removed because he’s savvy enough to know it will get attention and rally the already-assembled Terri army.
Obviously, it’s more likely that I’m wrong than not, but I’m saying I think it’s probably close to something like that.
All I can say is, I wish her a swift recovery. Period.
Via Richard at BlogsForTerri:
Mae Magouirk is out of hospice and has been transferred to the University of Alabama - Birmingham Medical Center.
Mae Magouirk is an 81 year-old widow being starved to death in hospice DESPITE HER INSTRUCTIONS to the contrary, thanks to the decision made by her granddaughter which was completely the opposite of what was stated in Magouirk’s living will.
No time for an in-depth post on this at the moment, so go see Romeocat’s roundup at CatHouse Chat - many others are on this story as well and she has links to them. See also Cao’s Blog for more links.
And of course, BlogsForTerri has been following this.
This is probably at least as bad as the Schiavo case, in that Magouirk SPECIFICALLY “stated that fluids and nourishment were to be withheld only if she were either comatose or “vegetative,” and she is neither. Nor is she terminally ill, which is generally a requirement for admission to a hospice.”

Ann Coulter lets ‘em have it–starting with leftists, BUT…
There are a few glaring exceptions. On the anti-killing side, to one extent or another, are: former Clinton lawyer Lanny Davis, former Gore lawyer David Boies, former O.J. lawyer Alan Dershowitz, Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman, McGovern and Carter strategist Pat Caddell, liberal blogger Mickey Kaus, Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader and Rainbow Coalition leader Jesse Jackson, as well as several of my friends who are pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage but not Pro-Adulterous Husbands Who, After Taking Up With Another Woman, Suddenly Recall Their Wives’ Clearly Stated Wish to Die.
Opinions about the Schiavo case seem to break down less on morals than on basic knowledge of the facts of the case.
And another good point:
Supporting the idea that positions on the Schiavo case are correlated with IQ, on the pro-killing side is Rep. Chris Shays, R-Conn., who denounced the legislation granting federal courts jurisdiction over Terri’s case, saying the Republican Party “has become a party of theocracy.” Yes, you remembered correctly: The House passed the bill overwhelmingly in a 203-58 vote, and the Senate passed it in a voice vote also with overwhelming support. (Surely, if anyone would defend the practice of being on a liquid diet, you’d think Ted Kennedy would.)
Also on the pro-killing side are conservatives still pissed off about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 who are desperately hoping to be elected “most consistent constitutionalist” by their local Federalist Society chapters. [Emphasis mine. --Ed.]
You can’t grow peanuts on your own land or install a toilet capable of disposing two tissues in one flush because of federal government intervention. But Congress demands a review of the process that goes into a governmental determination to kill an innocent American woman – and that goes too far!
Exactly what I’ve been saying about pointy-headed (false) purists:
But spare me the paeans to “strict constructionism” and “limited government.”
Funny…I never need to elaborate on what what she says; she again saves me the trouble of writing what I’ve been thinking. Heh.
UPDATE: And so does Dan.
So says Dr. Boyle of CODEBLUEBLOG…

To prove my point I am offering $100,000 on a $25,000 wager for ANY neurologist (and $125,000 for any neurologist/bioethicist) involved in Terri Schiavo’s case–including all the neurologists reviewed on television and in the newspapers who can accurately single out PVS patients from functioning patients with better than 60% accuracy on CT scans.
I will provide 100 single cuts from 100 different patient’s brain CT’s. All the neurologist has to do is say which ones represent patients with PVS and which do not.
If the neurologist can be right 6 out of 10 times he wins the $100,000.
I Said What I Meant, And I Meant What I Said
My points are what I first said about the image from Terri Schiavo’s CT scan:
1) It is NOT as bad as the neurologists and bioethicists play it up to be; and,
2) There are many elderly patients with various levels of mental functioning who have severe atrophy that is difficult to distinguish from Terri Schiavo’s atrophy
I stand by what I said. And I’m putting my money where my mouth is.
THAT is what I call REAL “medical ethics.” He’s not only staking big bucks on what he’s saying, he’s obviously staking his reputation on it as well.
READ IT ALL and pass it on!
Title of Liberty has prepared a chart showing the hub of connections in the Terri Schaivo Case - focusing on George Felos, Judge Greer and the Woodside Hospice that is operated by “Florida Suncoast Hospice.”
Myopic Zeal has a compilation of the cast of characters related to the Schiavo case.
BlogsforTerri is preparing to organize several different new categories to serve as a collective of posts that BlogsForTerri bloggers have written to help unweave the tangled webs of deceit and collusion involved in what looks to be ultimately, the death of Terri Shiavo by forced starvation and dehydration by judicial fiat.
Our intention is to provide the world a central location for learning about the killing of Terri Schiavo and what the world needs to do to keep it from happening to more and more of the world’s disabled and unwanted.
BlogsForTerri is also working on a special comment section where BlogsForTerri members can quickly register the URL of their posts, which will then be automatically pulled into the site. BlogsforTerri is also adding another 5 - 10 primary posting authors from the BlogsForTerri blogroll.
As you probably have heard, Jesse Jackson is now in Pinellas Park stumping on behalf of Terri Schiavo.
The word from my sources in Berkeley is that there has been a sudden run on razor blades and rope, coupled with steady foot traffic towards the Golden Gate Bridge.
