Buy a Gun Day 2009

(No, I’m not back - I’m just posting this and will be around in comments occasionally.)
April 15th is Buy a Gun Day and now there’s a website to go with it! Aaron describes BAG Day for the uninitiated:
Buy A Gun Day was conceived by me in 2003. There had been earlier attempts, but none responded to the liberal festival of forcible asset seizure into one of our own.
The goal is to get out the word and encourage not-yet-owners to at least become better informed and owners to make an effort to recruit those who may be standing on the fence or to move from the opposition to the ranks of the uncertain.
That the blogosphere enables us to coordinate the seventh Buy A Gun Day in 2009 while I live in the shadow of the Hollywood sign only makes the results of my effort sweeter.
In 2003, 54 blogs promoted the first “BAG Day“. The annual effort grew to over 200 blogs with the promotion by Kim du Toit, Free Republic, Instapundit and Hugh Hewitt. The date was also adopted by both the Liberty Belles and Moorewatch.
The United States Bill of Rights was ratified on December 15, 1791, my wife’s birthday (the month and day, that is, not the year!). I find that auspicious. Let’s work together to break at least 218 sites commemorating Buy A Gun Day this year, to highlight the 218 years of the Second Amendment.
While April 15 is of particular meaning in the United States, given the way the government plans to vastly increase our tax burdens, and those of our children and grandchildren, there is no reason whatsoever to limit your purchase to April 15!
Join us on Facebook’s Buy A Gun Day group, too.
*cough* Yeah, Facebook. That’s where I’ve been. :P
Anyway, here’s my baby.
I’ll probably just buy more ammo or a high-capacity magazine - or maybe a rifle. Something that’s in danger of being banned, probably. ;)
Other stuff for my fellow gun nuts to check out:
and of course, the NRA website(s). Join or renew your membership here!

Every time I feel a little bit down I can always come here and to similar blogs to relax and read some great stuff. ahhh…
Beth says:
You just like the guns. :D
Greg says:
Good idea. I mean its not like folks are going on shooting sprees in Alabama right now. Oh wait…
Never mind, let’s have some more of that American Idol blogging!
Beth says:
Yeah! Because everyone in Alabama and gun-controlled Germany is batshit crazy, Greg!
Fucking retard.
Greg says:
Hmm. I see your point.
I will participate in Buy A Gun Day.
Can you recommend a good weapon for me?
I like the look of yours, but I definitely want to buy an American made gat what with the economy and all.
Lord Bitememan says:
Hey Greg, those people who were killed in Alabama, do you give two shits about them beyond using them to make your cheap shots?
Beth says:
A recommendation? Depends on what you want it for - self-defense or hunting or target shooting for fun.
For self defense handguns, nothing beats the stopping power of a .357 Magnum revolver or a .40 cal semi-auto pistol. That said, the best handgun is one you are comfortable with - there’s no point getting a .357 Magnum if you don’t like firing it/if it has more recoil than you like. (I had one, didn’t like it much. Plus I don’t care for revolvers anyway, but I learned to fire weapons using semi-auto rifles and pistols.) Many gun shops with shooting ranges will let you try them out, or you could go with a friend to a firing range to try his or her weapons. Everyone will tell you “oh, get this one, it’s the best!” but that’s just because they’re biased in favor of what they have. What’s most important is one that you can fire safely and confidently - and of course, one that can do the job.
Don’t buy a gun and let it sit waiting for an emergency - practice using it safely before it’s a life or death situation.
Beth says:
Also, see? I can be nice when people are nice to me. :P
Chris says:
Oh, and Greg, a gunman against an unarmed victim is always going to win. Well, almost always. However, if one of the victims had been armed the outcome may have been different. The fact is that people with guns *stop* far more crimes than crazed killers on sprees kill. You just don’t hear about it. The press doesn’t cover that.
Remember the church shooting a while back where an armed parishoner took out a gunman? The press did everything they could to denegrate that woman for having a gun. They never considered the lives she saved by taking out her attacker.
Then again, why bother? Libs never get it anyway.
Greg says:
Chris,
I get it. My view is, have all the guns you want. I just find it amusing how this wedge issue never fails to get right-wingers to hop to. The question of our right to own guns has been legally answered far more often in favor of owning guns. Gun owners essentially won the battle, but still feel threatened that someone’s going to take away your guns and your rights. That’s the NRA spooking you, so you do what? Go out and buy more guns and ammo today!
Just laughing at the gun hysteria. While I wish we were generally less armed as a populace, I know that ain’t gonna happen and I don’t spend any time trying to change that fact. I know all gun enthusiasts aren’t crazy sociopaths, but all of the crazy sociopaths in these situations were also gun enthusiasts.
I hear you about the church shooting, that’s why I avoid church.
Too dangerous ;^)
Chris says:
BTW, Greg, what is wrong with AI blogging? Hmmm?
Lord Bitememan says:
And, here’s the suprising thing for anyone who knows me (and knows how rabidly pro-2nd Amendment I am), I don’t plan to buy a gun. I don’t mean that as an April 15 thing, I mean ever. I would never stand for a government that would take away my option to possess the means to defend myself. However, with a firearm not only comes awesome power, but also awesome responsibility. And, I happen to feel I have about the level of responsibilities I want in life, and don’t care to add anymore. I bet that suprises you, doesn’t it, Greg. Some pro-gun people actually do not, themselves, care to have the devices.
Chris says:
A big me too here LB. I don’t own one either. Don’t really want one. My choice ya know. I thought liberals were supposed to be all about choice.
Greg says:
Ha! that’s like my view on abortion. I’ve never been, and don’t plan to be personally involved in one, but I believe strongly in other people’s right to have them.

Aaron's cc: says:
Buy A Gun Day is not about imposing guns on people. Many make the choice to support gun control with no experience.
BAG Day is partially about being grandfathered in while there’s still time. Much easier to restrict sales than to demand people who legally bought firearms to give them up. A good argument can be made to throw at idiotarians that if California doesn’t overturn Prop 8 and allows that gays who married while it was legal then all legally purchased arms should be grandfathered in.
Having more than one firearm may be useful to gift someone who has suddenly become pro-2A (when it affected HIM) if SHTF.
The April 15 thing isn’t carved in lead. It’s just a mnemonic based on the wonderful quotation from Reagan about the difference between Dems and Republicans.
