It didn’t happen like we wanted but it happened. So what do we do now? There are a lot of people who will just want to stay in bed. Not me. There are a lot of people who will be depressed. Don’t. You have to believe in America. That’s not just a line. In my heart, I believe in America. I believe that America will overcome anything and prosper. We survived 4 years of Carter. We survived 8 years of Clinton. We survived 8 years of Bush. WE WILL SURVIVE THIS. Even if he bombs as president and is worse than Carter, we will survive it.
Gas prices may go up. They may not. We’ve dealt with that before, if it happens, we’ll deal with it again. Oil prices may go up, they may not. We’ve been there and done that. We will survive it if it happens. We may face test after test. And if we do, we will pass them because we’re Americans and that’s what we do. America is the best country on the planet. Sometimes we do some crazy things. But each time, we have come back and corrected the mistake. If Obama is as bad as we fear, he will be gone in 4 years and someone else will take his place and start repairing the damage.
On the flip side, maybe, just maybe, he will be better than we hope. Maybe his radical past is just that: past. Maybe all the things we fear will not happen. It’s possible that this great nation in its collective intelligence knows something we don’t. President elect Obama may just be what this country needs. Now I doubt it, but as an American, I am going to believe that this nation will overcome and advance. He deserves the chance to prove himself and the American spirit demands that we give him such.
In that spirit be the loyal opposition. Wait for his policies. If they are good, support them. If not, oppose them. Watch for what he does as president before you judge. He may surprise us. He may not. Either way, we have him for the next four years. Get used to him.
Keep your heads up. Keep positive. We will overcome this. We will be stronger for it. We are the greatest country in the world and that will not change. We’re Americans. Overcoming and getting stronger is what we do.
God Bless America. We need Him more than ever. And that is true no matter who is president.

BRAVO! BRAVO!! This is what I’ve been telling myself for the past couple of hours. Thank you for articulating this so beautifully. I MUST believe this and be optimistic. Cautiously optimistic, but I will not be made to be a pessimist.
Thank you again, Chris.

My sentiments exactly, Chris. But then, we’re conservatives. We don’t freak out and threaten to move to Canada or protest via self-immolation (that one still makes me laugh).

See…I’m going to disagree here. I’ve been trying to tell myself that whole Carter thing but that was a different world then. This is a catastrophe. Obama and the Congress can do harm to our nation that may never be rectified. We are still reaping the crop that Carter sowed 30 years ago. Think about it though What if Obama is able to ‘redistribute’ the wealth? What if he is able to push through programs that will cripple small business? And what about Talk Radio? Arguably the only other outlet to get opposing viewpoints and information other than blogs. We’ve seen time and again how even the most incompetent and criminal Democrat politicians continue to hold on to their elected positions simply because of their race (Mayor Barry, Cold Cash Jefferson, Mayor Nagin). Heck… John Murtha got re-elected after insulting his constituents. Congress has the lowest approval rating ever, lower than the Republican controlled Congress they unseated in 2006, yet they won seats tonight. How the heck does that happen? Even if The Chosen One turns out to be a completely ineffective boob or puppet of Pelosi or Reid is there any reason to doubt he won’t get a second term because he’s ‘one of them’ (a minority)?
There is no way any candidate could overcome the voter fraud, the MSM arm of Obama’s campaign, the millions in illegal contributions, the intimidation and threats, etc. I don’t think that’s going to get any better. The left is completely empowered now. But I say let the leftards have their messiah and single digit approval rating Congress. Let them have it and run things for a while. Since they are in the driver’s seat they cannot blame conservatives. At.all. So that’s a bright spot. And one more bright spot, now maybe we can put this ‘America is too racist to elect a black’ BS to rest.
I’m am trying to be philosophical about it. I guess you can tell I’m upset because I also know that 50% of us will have to pay the price for the utter stupidity of the remaining population.
When the truth does come out eventually it’s going to be painful to watch. I pray we’ll be fine but we have to use this to regroup and redirect our energies. No more being nice and reaching across the aisle when your opponent doesn’t do likewise. Maybe this will give conservatives a spine…finally.

This is a sad day for America. The US has elected someone President on nothing more than skin color and flowery words. Yes skin color! I am not being racist just how I feel. Millions of blacks voted for him because he is black. Whites voted because he is black and so they can feel good and say they voted for the 1st black president regardless of what or who he is. Neither group paid attention and analyzed the real obama. They simply did not care. They were blinded by smooth words and hatred of the present administration. Truth did not matter. Electing a dem come hell or high water did. Last night, I was slapped in the face. America ceased to be America. America has failed its intelligence test and brought shame upon itself. Shame on America.
What are you going to do for ME Obama besides raise my taxes to pay for “free” health care and a multitude of other social programs so you can “build” America from the bottom up while you take away my freedoms one at a time?
Btw…anything bad that happens in the next 4 years will be blamed on Bush even if it is obamas doing. Anything good that happens will make obama a hero even if he had nothing to do with it. yep.

Well, I more or less agree with you Chris, but we also need to accept that we have to do some introspection here. Conservatism itself didn’t lose, but certain aspects of it did. In particular, we were hammered on the economic conservatism and the immigration issues (remember, there are large hispanic populations in Indiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, and even Virginia). Now would be a good time to re-assess our positions on CIR and return to the budget-balancing roots of old. There’s more to it than that, but these would be good starts. Still, we can look at some good news too. In all liklihood, we will have filibuster strength in the Senate (Chambliss WILL hold that seat). This was not a huge mandate for a lurch leftward, especially not with so many conservative ballot initiatives passing. We have reason to be upbeat, and we definitely have prospects for the future.
On a personal note, I’m deeply saddened to report that my friend Joe Knollenberg was among the election casualties, having lost his seat to Gary Peters. Keep the faith Joe, it’s for the best, and let’s work on getting Marty in there some day.

It all comes down to mass immigration. Keep immigration levels high and Latino, Asian, Arab/Muslim and Hindu immigrants will tend to become Democrats. Buh-bye USA of old. No longer a constitutional republic of limited government because these new “immigrants/new Americans” are used to mass, street protests and simple majority rule democracy.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform is what my dear Lord Bitememan? You’re right about one thing - a lot of this election result is about immigration. And by that, I mean people like you chased out good conservative Latinos from the party with your obsession about Latinos being the only immigrants. Bush carried 45% of the Latino vote in 2004, and McCain didn’t even come close, despite his “RINO” (your words, not mine) position on immigration.
Thanks a f’ing lot for alienating so many Americans. And YES, I mean AMERICANS. American voters who happen to be Hispanic, and who are generally more conservative than not. Keep it up, and we lose Texas next time!
Thanks for making the GOP and conservatism look like a bunch of assholes.
Thanks a LOT for helping elect a leftist-lawyer with very little experience in anything other than as a social agitator. That’s just what “we” needed to get back on track, right? I swear to God, if there’s one thing I’m bitter about now, it’s the bloody idiots on OUR SIDE who made this happen. I have said all along that if we lost, it’d be because of the blowhards on our side who made the Republican Party so distasteful to so many people. There’s no reason why John McCain should have lost the independent and late-undecided voters, but they didn’t want to vote for the Republican Party. They just decided to give the Obamateur a chance, just to have a “change,” even if they weren’t sure about him.
God, I wish more regular-Joe Republicans and conservatives were on the internets, and fewer hostile extremists were. Since they aren’t, I’m going to take another break from blogs until sanity returns, and deal with normal people. Nutters make me sick.
Lord Bitememan says:
Just to put it in perspective rsg, I crunched some numbers. Latinos account for better than 13% of the American population. There was this crackpot liberal once, a fella by the name of George W. Bush, who had this crazy idea that if you are nice to Hispanic voters and try and relate with them that they might vote for you. Legend has it he carried some 40% or better of their votes and served two terms in the White House. Then he had this crazy idea about trying to restore the rule of law, allow several million people the chance to become American citizens, and remove, systematically, the basis for coming to this country illegally by replacing it with a means of coming here legally. Thank God the Republican party had the courage a foresight to thwart this crazy man’s ideas and cost us two straight elections in a row. Latinos, bah! Who needs them? Certainly losing parties don’t need America’s second largest population demographic.
K, tongue in cheek mode over. Ponder this. Latinos account for 13% of the US population. Barack Obama won 60% of their votes. His margin of victory over McCain about 6 points. With 60% of the vote from 13% of the population one can extrapolate that Obama carried 10.8% of the overall vote derived from Hispanics. Had we cut his margin with Hispanics by 20%, he would have only carried 40% of the Hispanic vote. That would have meant Obama would have only derived 5.2% of the overall vote from Hispanics. In other words, the margin would have cut Obama down by 5.6 points. Now take a look at that spread again. Starting to see what I mean about the need to court America’s Hispanic vote?

They got what they wanted. Hope they like the aftertaste it’s going to leave. I will not play along. I will speak up every time they try to pass some far left piece of garbage. And if one of my Congresscritters attempts to reach across the aisle, I will smack the crap out of him/her.
Reaching across the aisle has cost us two elections. It has the stench of being wishy washy. By reaching across the aisle we have allowed the concept of “center” to move far left. If you believe your position is correct, then stand your ground and make the other side come to you.
And when the liberals start to develop buyers remorse, I promise to be the first in their face saying I told you so. Next time pay attention.
Lord Bitememan says:
Razor, we did NOT lose the last two elections because we reached across the aisle. We lost because a number of our own couldn’t keep their dicks in their pants (Mark Foley, Larry Craig), their hands out of the till (Jack Abramoff, Ted Stevens), their mouths shut about minorities (George Allen, the immigration debate), and in the meantime couldn’t articulate an answer to the economic challenges that faced the nation while Democrats outflanked us on social issues in red states. It would be petty and make us look worse if our response to this was to go scorched earth, try and obstruct with what little minority we have, and piss and cry because we got our ba-ba taken away.
Let’s act like Republicans here. The Democrats pout and recriminate when they lose, we get back to work. Let’s try and get what parts of our agenda through that we can. There’s pro-gun and pro-life Democrats. Let’s work with them to get done what we can. We don’t need majorities to fight for our principles, we just need like minds who are willing to work with us for a time. Let’s rehabilitate our party image so that we don’t suffer more in 2010 and have a shot in 2012.
raz0r says:
LBM,
While Foley, etc. played a hand, they were not the sole reason for the last two elections. We have party leadership that can at best be described as conservative ultra-light (less filling, lousy taste). Not all our Congresscritters are like this, but enough that it mattered.
As for the perps in our ranks, we have the unique distinction that we deal with them post haste in the public sphere for all to see. Also, our side wasn’t alone in having scandal during the election cycles. Across the aisle did as well, but they got attaboys. Meanwhile, we continued in our attempts to be good neighbors.
How did each side get rewarded? The answer would be that liberals control both the House and the Senate and gained seats this election. They gained seats even though they have current scandals and their fingerprints are all over this financial boondoggle. Murtha flat out called his constituents racists and was sent back to Congress. And where is William Jefferson? Why I think he still holds his seat, re-elected while in the midst of scandal. So excuse if I don’t buy scandal being the primary factor as to why we’re the ones outside looking in.
There’s a Toyota commercial running now where the guy talks about this manufacturer saying their car is just as reliable as Toyota, designed just as nice, etc. He finishes with why not just buy a Toyota. People looked at what we, the Republican Party, offered and figured why bother, might as well go with the Toyota (and get a check to boot).
And I never advocated for scorched earth. What I said was stand our ground/principles and make them move towards us. Which is exactly what they have done to us these past few years. And with every move we made, the center shifted and the core held its tongue. That plan isn’t working.
Work with the Blue Dogs? Sure. But they aren’t in control of their party, never will be. They will never rise to hold power seats unless they tow the line with party leadership/ideology. And their numbers are too small within their party to change it. We stand a better chance of getting them to change party affiliation.
The GOP can’t rehab its image if it continues to work with the left while abandoning its party base (that would be us Reagan Republicans). If the GOP leadership wants to turn the party into Rockefeller Republicans, they’ll do it without support from me.

Good post. I quoted and linked it.
Lord Bitememan says:
Razor, you totally left out the economic aspect of this. You totally missed that WE were the party in power. That’s why OUR scandals are the ones that killed us, OUR failure to address the economic hardships of the manufacturing states cost us seats. Did you notice that most of the seats we lost in the past couple years have come out of states like Ohio, Missouri, and the rest of the northeast? Hey, guess what states have been hit the hardest by jobs going overseas. Our party sat back and twiddled its thumbs, planted our fingers in our ears, and did nothing about it. Every Republican should have sat up and paid attention in 2006 when the Democratic governor of Michigan who presided over the economic ruin of this state was re-elected by double-digits. The country clearly placed the burden on US to provide an answer. We didn’t. Now look at us.
So, they have some scandals too? Yeah. And some of their paid for those scandals too. Did you notice Tim Mahoney was tossed out of Congress on Tuesday? Not all theirs paid, true. Neither did all of ours. Notice Ted Stevens is likely to retain his seat despite a recent felony conviction. The point is bad Republicans have turned our brand toxic. This nonsense you are bringing up about the center shifting is a crock. When California bans gay marriage, the center of the country hasn’t shifted left, if anything it’s moved MORE towards our side. When new blue states like Colorado join old blue ones like California in rejecting green energy source proposals, the center has not shifted left.
Again, I return to one immutable fact. We got tossed because we pissed off Hispanic voters, period. If McCain had polled as well with Hispanic voters as Bush did he would be president right now, but he got lumped in with other Republicans by a Hispanic population still pissed about the treatment our party gave them over CIR. Going to Washington to foot drag and grow recalcitrant isn’t going to rehabilitate our party. We need to go back, get to work, restore our credibility, and win back the groups we’ve pissed off over the past four years. If we do that, we win, period. If we go back to foot drag, dig, in, bark up and down about how right we are, then, well, it was a good party while it lasted, but those days will be behind us.
raz0r says:
LBM,
We’re going to disagree on this.
You can name a couple of theirs who paid, while naming one of ours who still holds his seat (for now, see below). The fact, on the issue of accountability, is we own it. Hastings is still holding a seat and he was impeached. The Fannie/Freddie fiasco has several Dems involved and they were re-elected. And then there is Rezko. How many Dems are tied to him? The President-elect is one.
You want to pin the financial mess on us, while failing to mention that for the past two years the liberals have controlled Congress. Folks like Pelosi and Reid who have lower approval ratings than Bush. The same liberals who stonewalled Republican attempts (for years) at sensible reform measures. We didn’t sit on our hands. Liberals in Congress prevented any forward action.
The Dem party worked the same magic back in the mid 70s with regards to jobs. Were you around then? Double digit interest rates and unemployment double what it is now. It took many years to fix that debacle. You want a better reason as to why the Rust Belt is hurting? Unions. You know how the story goes. Who loves unions? Liberals. And both groups got greedy/drunk on the power. This is the fruit of the shackles they placed on many companies.
And the shift is not nonsense or a crock. Look at the makeup of the House and Senate. The majority of those folks with a D after their names are not Blue Dogs. The leadership isn’t even close to center-left. Most of them make Arlen Spector look almost palatable. Those folks just didn’t show up for brunch and decide to stay, they were voted in and “given” the helm. These people get to steer the ship. Guess where they’ll head. BTW, the moment a judge rules on Stevens (currently he’s fighting the verdict), the GOP can strip him of his seat and will. Until then, there isn’t a thing the GOP can do about it without getting into a protracted fight with him. So Stevens is not likely to retain his seat even though he won reelection.
Which brings me back to what I said in my last comment. We kick our scum to the curb or they go willingly (Stevens the exception). The Dems send theirs back out for reelection. Evidence. Foley did the right thing and removed himself. Mahoney did not and he wasn’t tossed by Dem leadership either, he was tossed by the electorate. See the difference?
You mention Prop 8, and I’ll add Amendment 2, that were passed. Those aren’t evidence that the Dems are moving our way. All that shows is that our leadership is screwing us over by offering up conservative-lite candidates (who lose). Folks will vote in favor of conservative ideals (Prop 8/Amendment 2), they will not vote in favor of middle-of-the road conservative candidates (McCain).
The current GOP leadership needs to be sat down and replaced. They have reached across the aisle too many times. They reach while the libs move further left. Time to return to core principles and then stand our ground and forget this moderate republican nonsense. It doesn’t sell.
Lord Bitememan says:
You can go the rout of recalcitrance Razor, but you won’t like what you find. The truth is the electorate doesn’t toss moderate Republicans because they find them “wishy washy,” the fact is moderate Republicans pay for the sins of their more conservative brethren who lurch further and further to the right with each passing year. Licoln Chafee didn’t lose his seat because Rhode Island voters wanted a “true conservative,” they tossed him because they wanted “true conservatives” to be in the minority irrespective of Chafee’s individual virtue. What states didn’t flip this time around? It was the core conservative states. All the moderate ones, and some of the fence sitters, flipped to a Democratic party that has moved to the right, and away from a Republican party that has turned to a small tent party. This used to be a party that embraced moderates. This used to be a party that allowed for some diversity of perspective. Now with each successive defeat it’s a party that places a firm boot in the backside of its increasingly shrinking moderate faction. Keep it up. At this rate we’ll be the ones who self-destruct. Look at what happened in 2000. We lost the popular vote on the wake of an ethically tainted president’s hand-picked successor and lack-luster campaigner’s tragically mismanaged campaign. We won by virtue of systematic fluke. Then in 2004 we barely held on in a mid-war presidential election. Now we lost, we lost kinda big, and the talk I’m hearing is slating us for another loss.
So, yeah, recalcitrance in the wake of repeated electoral difficulties is just what we need. At least, maybe it’s what I need to see. Rapidly I see two directions going on. The Dems are making the move closer to where I am. They’re compromising on the gun issues, they’re looking for ways to compromise with more pro-life positions. Secondly, I see a Republican party whose base doesn’t much care for more moderate voters like me anymore, and whose answer to ever last signal from the voters is to lurch further and further to the right. Well, I could take the dissonance between myself and where the party is moving, I could take splitting on ballot initiatives with where the party generally stands, but I am at heart a pragmatist. I can’t fathom wasting time cast votes for a party that wants to make no attempt to move where a winning coalition of voters might be found. I don’t know, am I in the wrong party? Was I wasting time in 1996 making those calls for Dole? Was I wasting my time in 2000 taking a sabbatical from school to work for Bush? Cause I’ve sure put a whole hell of a lot up on my end for a party that now it seems doesn’t want to meet me or the other moderates half-way on trying to get back where the voters really are. Maybe I might need to look for a new home in 2012.
raz0r says:
LBM,
You want to get in bed with the left, go ahead. Don’t complain when you wake up with fleas. The left is not interested in kumbaya or singing along to theme from Barney.
You mention gun compromise as an issue. What’s to compromise? It’s in the Constitution. SCOTUS says it’s a right guaranteed to us. There is nothing to compromise about. And they aren’t compromising. They are already talking about raising the taxes on guns and ammo, repealing CCW, banning certain weapons, etc. The guy just elected served on the Joyce Foundation. Yeah, some compromise.
And compromise on pro-life issues? Did you miss it when Barry said he would sign FOCA (this will come from Congress) and lift the ban on stem cells from embryos (cancel Bush’s executive order)? Sound like compromise to you? Almost forgot, get ready to see the “Mexico City” ban go away as well. Yep, our tax dollars going for abortions in other countries. Mmmm, smell the change.
You give an inch and they will whittle away at it an inch at a time. That’s how they work. FOCA, secret ballot, Fairness Doctrine, etc. They won’t go for it all at once, just an inch at a time. It’s in their DNA.
And your statement that the Republican Party doesn’t embrace moderates is funny. Have you even looked at the Democratic Party lately? Where’s their pro-life wing? Almost non-existent, relegated to the sidelines. How about their pro-business portion? Does it even exist? Does “Hey, let’s raise taxes” sound familiar to you? How about the Christians? They’re bit players in the Dems, kept in the closet and only trotted out when necessary. Center-Left Dems (the Blue Dogs) are small time in the party, the exception; far left Dems are the norm. Look no further than their leadership. Look at their stronghold areas. Yeah, they’re all about inclusiveness.
I stand by what I said at the beginning of this thread - return to core values, Reagan republicanism if you want a label. You want more of the same when it has availed the party nothing in the last three elections and cost us dearly the last two.
You want to jump ship, that’s your decision. Good luck if you do so, but don’t be feign surprise with what you find once you get underneath the veneer of the Democratic Party. I work with them everyday of the work week.
