The Anchoress has a name!
She’s out of the anonymity closet! Yay! Two places to read her! See her other articles at InsideCatholic here.
Okay, so dropping the veil of anonymity is probably not a big deal if you don’t have a blog, but she’s one of my all-time favorite people EVER, and I’m happy she gets to have a name in public. :) Even better, she told me she’s “out” when she sent me the best thing I’ve ever read about end of life issues, and everyone should read it–not just people who are dealing with those things right now, because everyone will at some time.
I know, you wanna put a face to the name too, right? Here. :)

Reading her long wunnerful piece On Dignity and Suffering reminded me back in the 70’s I put myself through college working first in the pediatrics wing of a Turtle Creek nursing home in Anderson, Indiana. We had batter/abused and CP kids from very small to about 18-19 years old. I worked as an orderly changing uncounted shitty diapers on young and old–fed lots of pureed meals and even changed my share of “sanitary napkins” for some of these kids. Mostly I (at 20) ran “the nursery” and this was an eight hour shift devoted to about 8-10 of the toughest cases..little ones would always get their hair brushed and a little plastic bow in her hair and the little boys always got their cubs baseball shirts on game day.
We had one case of about a five year old bow who at age 3 his dad had taken a bat to the childs head and there was a very large lump on the side. In feeding him you would sit cross legged on the mat and slowly with a rubber coated spoon administer pureed green beans and the like. One day while feeding him he had a very strong seizure and his brain imploded running out his ear (if I recall)and very much onto my white orderly uniform–a real tough moment. Al I want to say is that you can find the Lord in those places and He was there every moment. All the staff went by first names except Mrs. Sisson who had been a corps nurse in WWII (I believe)–she could explain the suffering and on more than one occasion I saw her praying over a child or staying long past time just to be there. I would think she has passed on now as have many of those kids but their life runs through my head and let me tell you a great secret.
The Human Heart is the ONLY vessle that can hold more after it has been broken.

That was a powerful piece….so much it brought me to tears. It took me back to the days my mom was so sick and dying. She put it into words that I simply never could have.
