Hey Fredheads–Fred endorses John McCain!

I’ve always said it was just a matter of time. :)
Fred Thompson, the one-time Republican presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. John McCain Friday, calling on the party to “close ranks” behind the presumed nominee.
“This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,” Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.
Thompson’s endorsement was expected. The two men were colleagues for years in the Senate and shared what associates called a friendship. But while he was in the race, Thompson had bristled at the idea that he was going to drop out and endorse McCain.

Yes it was just a matter of time before this happened. And before anyone reads too much into the timimng of this, Fred has been dealing with a family illness which is one of the reasons why he dropped out when he did. I would guess that this issue has subsided enough for him to finally comment. Here’s to hoping all is well with him.

Yeah, I think it was/is his mother. I haven’t seen anything on it recently, and Fred has been understandably quiet about it.
I don’t think Fred would make a good VP PR wise. A McCain-Thompson ticket would be blasted as “Grumpy Old Men.” The Lemon-Matthau parodies would abound. Cabinet? Sure, but not VP.

I agree with JR as to Fred being the VP nominee. McCain is going to need someone young and energetic to offset his age.

The man’s name is McCain. Maybe your reading comprehension skills are lacking, or maybe you think that little play on words is clever. It isn’t.
Wouldn’t it be awful if hardliners lost this particular subject to be self righteous about? Whatever would they do for moral preening?

Terrye, it’s not spelling per se so much as it is a lack of comprehension of the English language. Coincidently enough, the very same bill these critics hate has provisions for illegals to learn English, but I digress. McCain-Kennedy required illegals to pay a fine and apply for citizenship to stay here, either that or face deportation. So, some simple definitions:

A penalty cannot, by definition, be an amnesty. No amount of demagoguery and mex-o-phobia can change the meaning of these terms. Is it a kind-hearted punishment? Sure. It’s not an amnesty. . . that’s what Reagan declared.

The major provision that wasn’t talked about in the MC CAIN-KENNEDY bill was that the illegals were automatically granted legal status (as some kind of guest worker) as soon as W signed the bill.
The citizenship and the rest was just window
dressing for PR use.

“Inside America
McCain-Kennedy would establish a worker visa program that would allow employers to temporarily hire foreign citizens to fill jobs that cannot be filled with U.S. laborers. That is not a bad idea. However, the act proposes to allow individuals unlawfully here to stay and sign up for the program by paying a $1,500 fine.”
So, yes, they would not automatically be given legal status, they would have to pay a fine. Whether or not you think the fine is light, it is still a fine and therefore not an amnesty. Sorry, the only place in which this qualified as an amnest was in the world of spin.

Today, I switched from Independent to Democrat and voted for Obama in the Nebraska Democratic Caucus.
Tomorrow, I’ll switch from Democrat to Republican and vote for Huckabee in the Nebraska Republican Primary.
The next day, I’ll switch back to Independent.
On election day, I’ll vote for my congressman, senator, and other issues.
My spot for the President will be unmarked.

Wll you know what? Just bitching about these people but not really doing anything either is a form of amnesty.
At least they tried to come up with a solution to the problem, all these people have done so far is complain.
To be honest, I have begun to wonder if the hardliners really want to deal with the issue of immigration reform, for the same reason that Democrats don’t really want to end poverty…fertile ground in all that resentment, works well for demagogues.
