Sharon Jasper says she’s poor and is demanding her “right” to her government-subsidized housing.
Sharon Jasper, a former St. Bernard complex resident presented by activists Tuesday as a victim of changing public housing policies, took a moment before the start of the City Hall protest to complain about her subsidized private apartment, which she called a “slum.” A HANO voucher covers her rent on a unit in an old Faubourg St. John home, but she said she faced several hundred dollars in deposit charges and now faces a steep utility bill.
“I’m tired of the slum landlords, and I’m tired of the slum houses,” she said.
Pointing across the street to an encampment of homeless people at Duncan Plaza, Jasper said, “I might do better out here with one of these tents.”
Jasper, who later allowed a photographer to tour the subsidized apartment, also complained about missing window screens, a slow leak in a sink, a warped back door and a few other details of a residence that otherwise appeared to have been recently renovated.
This is Sharon Jasper’s “slum.”

By the way, Sharon Jasper isn’t just some random “victim” picked off the streets by activists. She IS an activist herself, according to none other than the New Orleans Labor Media Project, which is very much a part of the protests.
[T]he politicians, the government agencies and the developers have surrounded St. Bernard with a chain link fence topped by barbed-wire. And they’ve told hard-working, God-fearing people like Sharon Jasper to stay the hell out.
“Our families have been displaced all over the United States. Bring them back, then let’s talk about redevelopment,” Jasper argues.
Jasper is fighting back. She spearheads a tenant association that is working with the AFL-CIO’s Gulf Coast Revitalization Program to convince local authorities to rehabilitate rather than annihilate public housing stock.
“We, the poor working class, are the people who helped build this city,” Jasper says, jabbing her finger into the air, as if she were about to pull down the menacing barbed wire barrier. “We have a right to return. This is our home.”
Somebody call a waaahmbulance. As you might expect, there is plenty of housing available to her in New Orleans.
As housing activists continued to protest the proposed demolition of four public housing complexes, federal housing officials provided new details Tuesday about hundreds of public housing units available across New Orleans, with dozens of units ready for occupants in the B.W. Cooper, the former Desire and the Guste developments.
Housing officials said hundreds of private apartments where disaster or Section 8 vouchers can be used are also available to help meet the needs of displaced public housing residents, both in the short and long term.
Anyone else sick of the people of New Orleans who demand more, more, more, but apparently do nothing to try to improve their own situations (much less anyone else’s) themselves?
Anyone else here who pays his or her own rent or mortgage who wouldn’t mind having a home like Sharon Jasper’s, massive teevee and all? Oh, but she’s “poor” and doesn’t like living in that “slum.” Disgusting, disgraceful leech.

The unmitigated gall of these parasites leaves me speechless sometimes. If it were in my power that sponging bitch would be on the street eating out of garbage cans. I live in Thailand and I know many people here who would love to be poor in New Orleans!!! Why oh why do we give them anything? They don’t appreciate it and they certainly don’t deserve it.

Maybe she should just go outside and see if some of the homeless would like to change places. I’m sure she will get some takers. I am sick of Katrina and Nawlins. Enough is enough. Hey, Beth, how is the recovery going in Lower Alabama? We in Mississippi have pretty much got it all back together after over two years. Wonder how much longer Louisiana is going to take? Imagine what it would be like if they actually got hit by a hurricane of the magnitude of Katrina, instead being on the “good” side?
You should check out the Wikipedia page that states that the most catastrophic lost of life was in New Orleans. I guess the truth is gone regarding this whole thing. It actually says “as the hurricane passed East of the city.” They fail to note that it was almost 110 friggin’ miles East of the city.
They can kiss my ass. Well, no, I know that they are screwed with the people they elect. Sorry.

Hey Two Dogs- not to downplay the severity of the situation in Mississippi, because clearly you’re upset about the lack of attention paid to your problems.
The fact of the matter is that the catastrophe in New Orleans is different because the destruction caused by Katrina itself may have been manageable, but the problem was that New Orleans IS BELOW SEA LEVEL, so although the hurricane damage wasn’t as great as in Missisippi, the FLOODING caused by the broken levees was what caused most of the damage. Or are you more upset by the lack of media attention?

Not to dispute your comment C-Note on every account, but, I am not upset at all about the National news coverage that we received. AT ALL. We here in the areas that were actually affected by the hurricane, simply manned-up and did what we always do, work, and let poor little activists from New Orleans piss, cry, and moan. Oh, woe and swoon! We certainly did not sit around waiting on someone to help us get our “shows” back on our big screen, we had actual work to do and plenty of it. Of course, OUR governor didn’t sit around playing politics with his constituency either.
Fact: New Orleans has three general populated areas that are NEAR sea level. Check a local topo, it is not below sea level, except in some uninhabited places. The lowest point that I find that is developed is just under two feet above sea level. They built levees UP and created a bowl above sea level. Just because someone says that repeatedly doesn’t make it true. But do you think that the Mississippi Gulf Coast is any higher? It fronts the damn Gulf! It is the definition of sea level! Pascagoula, Mississippi, on the far East side of our state, the other way from New Orleans got over seven feet of surge in every building South of Highway 90.
Also, I had friends from New Orleans come stay with me because of all of the problems there with the police being excused from duty by Mayor Nagin and no utility workers being allowed into the city because of that lack of protection. The only law enforcement they had was the National Guard, of which there were 7000 on the ground BEFORE the flooding even started, the day after Katrina. I hesitate to think what would have happened had the emrgency plan not been developed before Blanco became governor of Louisiana, I’m guessing that it would have ten times worse.
Everything that has been published in the mainstream press about the “catastrophe” in New Orleans has been bullshit, this situation was completely caused by BAD local government and lack of planning. Check the path of the hurricane, it passed East of Waveland, Mississippi, which was completely destroyed. And fourteen of their police officers were washed from the police station in the surge of 27 feet because they were still on duty. Luckily they all survived by hanging on to a Bradford pear tree and each other.
The thing that I am upset about is the issue with the recently repaired levee system that was completed by Mary Landrieu’s (LA Senator-D) brother’s construction company under a no-bid contract from the Corps of Engineers, wonder how he got that contract? Where was that in the news? And she actually had the audacity to call out President Bush and threaten him on that knowing full well that the contract was completed during President Bill Clinton’s last term in office by her OWN DAMN BROTHER. Oh, and she lives above the Lake, too, so her family was not affected so much.
You hear all about New Orleans, but you hear nothing about the areas of Louisiana that WERE affected. You should have seen Bogalusa, it was flattened. I never saw that on the news, but oddly enough, they are back in business too.

As a former resident of Pascagoula, I will confirm this (I didn’t live there during Katrina, but I know hundreds of people who still do live there). Highway 90 is at least five miles from the beach, too. My dearly departed grandparents’ old house on the beach no longer exists–almost every house on the beach was completely gone, nothing but the lot left after Katrina. To this day, there are still areas of P’goula that aren’t anywhere near recovered.
My sister lives in Gulfport, and it’s still a mess there in some parts. Hurricane recovery is a dreadfully long process.
Here in Mobile, there wasn’t much that wasn’t fixed up relatively quickly. I haven’t seen Bayou La Batre and the other areas south of I-10/Hwy 90, though; no reason for me to go there. Honestly, you never hear about it so I imagine most are doing okay. Really, Ivan was more devastating here in ‘Bama–mostly on the east side of Mobile Bay, though. We sort of dodged a few bullets with those two hurricanes here in Mobile (knock on wood–I hope our luck holds out!). My parents (and everyone else with property on Mobile Bay) lost their pier/wharf/whateveryoucallit during Ivan, and not two weeks after a new one was built, Katrina wiped it out. AFAIK, they haven’t bothered rebuilding another one, although I could be wrong about that. (It’s just a summer weekend house, not used all that often, and needless to say it isn’t exactly a tragic loss!)

2 Dogs, Go get em. Isn’t Landrieu one of the dimwits that just voted no on Christmas but yes on Ramadan as offical holidays? NO PD has had the worst record of department for years. Then a dumb mayor and dumber governor isnt’ a plus either. I think they need to try and widen the one gene pool thing they got going there. We got hit here in FL every two weeks and I don’t know of anyone that sat and wait for any one to hold their hand and change any diapers. They need to understand the meaning of the dreaded word JOB there. The entire Gulf Coast got hit 2 years in a row in case they don’t know that part time and time again. The rest of us just keep on trucking and they sit down and wait. Birdbrains.
