Mitt Romney and Mormonism

Dear Mitt,
I am sorry you have been compelled to give a speech about your religious faith. It is absurd and embarrassing that there are people who expect you to apologize for or deny your faith in order to get their votes. I am not terribly familiar with the Mormon faith, but I admit that of what I do know, there are some things that strike me as…shall we say, weird. Then again, there are some weird things about many Christian denominations. I’ve known and worked with a few Mormons, and there was absolutely nothing “cultish” about them. (Okay, I think people who don’t do caffeine are a little nutty, but that goes for anyone–especially just plain old health fanatics.)
I realize that even though you did turn Massachusetts into a Mormon theocracy and banned tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine in the state that you must…oh wait. No you didn’t. In fact, some of the same yahoos who are terrified by your personal faith are the same people who think you’re too liberal. I certainly haven’t seen gay marriage made into a sacrament of the LDS, anyway.
Good for you for not ditching your religious beliefs for a few votes.
To the yahoos who won’t vote for him because he’s a Mormon, grow up. It’s one thing to not be a Romney supporter for political reasons, but because he’s a Mormon? It’s completely irrational. You don’t have to like his religion, because you’re not voting for the Mormon faith; you’re voting for the President of the United States of America.

I could care less about his faith. He shouldn’t waste his time telling us about it.
Tell us how you plan on securing our borders. Tell us how you’ll get rid of illegals without resorting to amnesty.
Tell us how you’ll protect this nation. Tell us how you’ll prosecute our wars and won’t run from confrontation.
Tell us how you’ll restore fiscal responsibility to government. Tell us how you’ll reduce our taxes and shrink our bloated government.
Those topics carry more weight with me, and I wager with most of us as well.

I’m not sure you can dismiss faith totally as a factor when choosing a president.
Huckabee uses his faith to justify his position on illegal aliens. Even though he talks tough now when he was gov of Arkansas he was a rabid open borders fanatic.
I live here so I know.

Old Guy, it’s not that I dismiss it completely; I just don’t see Mormonism as incompatible with the American way of life.
I’d have a different opinion about a Muslim candidate, I’m sure. I realize that’s inconsistent, but I’m just being honest about it. Or maybe not so inconsistent, if you consider Islam incompatible with our way of life. ;-)
I agree with you that faith can and does shape one’s perceptions, but on the other hand there are plenty of agnostics and atheists who have both good and bad ideas. I just don’t get how Romney’s perception of Jesus Christ is terribly relevant. The argument could be made that you could question the judgment of someone who believes that goofy Mormon stuff, but then you’d have to accept that plenty of atheists think that about all theists–Christian, Jewish, LDS, etc. I completely reject the LDS story, but I don’t think mainstream Mormons are crazy or bad for believing it. It seems to work for most of them–”whatever floats your boat,” so to speak. (The crazy fundie Mormon polygamist types, though–that’s a different story, but that’s also a different Mormon sect altogether from Romney’s.)

I am not voting for Romney because he is a Mormon but because he is a liberal. He is for gun control, baby killing, gay marriage, high taxes, and socialized medicine. I bet if you google rino, his picture will come up.

I’ve said the entire time that the reason Romney can’t get elected (and therefore shouldn’t get the Republican nomination) is because of the Mormon issue. I care very little about his faith, all I care about is whether or not he can win. I don’t think he can win because there’s way too many people who won’t “grow up”.
Me? I’m pragmatic, I’ll vote for anyone with an (R) after their name who opposes Clintobama. Not so with way too many other voters who don’t like the idea that Romney’s a Mormon. The clear fact is that we’ll need every single vote we can get to win the White House and I just don’t think that Romney can get the job done.

I know you don’t Beth, and I would really hate to see this election come down to arguing about religious beliefs. We got plenty of other things to be concerned about other than how someone worships, or doesn’t, God.
What this issue is about is values, a lot of people want to elect someone who’s beliefs and values mirror their own.
For instance Huckabee says his beliefs and values force him to consider illegals who are in this country as citizens deserving of all the protections of the constitution, even though they are breaking the law.
This is in direct contradiction to the majority of citizens in the United States.
On this issue his religious beliefs are in direct conflict with the will of the people……what will he do?
Follow his beliefs, or respect the wishes of those who elected him?
Perception can be everything when looking at a candidate and unfortunately, because of the example I’ve given, people will have a tendency to look into someones faith.

How can anyone in their right mind and in these “Latter Daze” seriously vote for flip-flop Mitt? He gets up there like a cardboard cut out of a “Ken” doll from a Barbie set and rattles off conservative talking points for what his audience supposedly wants to hear, in spite of his message being completely contradictory to the socialist medicine and ultra liberal policies he installed in his regime in the People’s Republic of Taxachussetts. Also, since the Huckster is another religious fanatic, I’m voting for Rudy all the way!!!
