Jim Carrey spoke to the United Nations Security Council yesterday urging them to stop all international arms shipments to Burma. He asked them to put pressure on the Burmese junta, the military rulers of the country now known as Myanmar, to end their lethal suppression of the pro- pro-democracy protesters as well as its detention of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
He appealed directly to Than Shwe, head of the latest junta.
There is nothing to defend if you have lost the faith of your people. It is already over.
To the United Nations Security Council members and especially to China and Russia who have resisted sanctions against Burma, he said:
This is a government that uses its weapons not in self defense, but against its own citizens.
The time has come for the United Nations Security Council to start acting less like a group of corporations and more like united nations.

Micah Tillman says:
Way to go Jim Carey!
But why is he speaking at the UN?
But, I say again, way to go Jim Carey!
Mister Prickly says:
“There is nothing to defend if you have lost the faith of your people. It is already over.” Guess there’s more in Jim Carrey’s head than slapstick comedy, huh? Great to see someone from Hollywood with a few smarts.
Beth (Blue Star Chronicles) says:
Micah - I have no idea why he was speaking at the UN. I guess I should if I’m going to write about it, huh? I do know that he has some connection to Aung San Suu Kyi and has been an outspoken critic of the Burmese government holding her as a political prisoner since 1989.
Mister Prickly - its nice to me to see someone from hollywood taking the part of the oppressed people rather than their usual stance of taking the part of the dictators who oppress the people!
Hla Lee says:

Jim Mooney says:
And I see some mags were making fun of Carey and saying he’d gone nuts, since he claimed to have a spiritual conversion. Well, he’s doing good things instead of just counting his money - maybe he did. We have become so totally materialistic we can’t even conceive that someone might have an Actual spiritual conversion.
He’s not acting weird like Tom Cruise and his daffy Scientology. He’s making sense.
