Iowa Ames Straw Poll: Like Mike?

How can you NOT like Mike Huckabee? Nice second place show in the Iowa Ames straw poll!

Y’all know I’m a Fredhead (shameless link to Fred), but I’ll tell you the truth–I’m crazy about Mike Huckabee, too. In fact, the only reason I haven’t been supporting Huckabee since the beginning is because I don’t think in this current political climate, a former preacher can get elected President. Maybe I’m wrong, and I know it’s early (as hell) in the election season (if you can call this the election season), but he’s still lacking name recognition. I’ve got a little gut-check that says maybe a former preacher shouldn’t get elected right now anyway, because there are enough people losers who malign Christianity because they associate it with conservatism already. (Don’t lie, rabid Church of Atheism devotees–you do, and it’s obvious.) I’d rather people hate conservatives than hate Christians and Christianity because of politics. Anyway, huge digression.
I don’t even agree with Huckabee on some issues–the Fair Tax is the main one, and it’s a big one for me. (I hate the unFair Tax–Flat Tax all the way for me.) But I can’t help but like him; he is as honest and trustworthy as any candidate I’ve ever seen, and you can’t help but notice his positive outlook. His temperament reminds me of Reagan, and that’s the mark of a winner, even if he doesn’t win the Presidency.
I hate to take away from Mitt Romney’s win today, but I’m really happy about Huckabee’s showing because maybe now he’ll start getting the attention he should get. He’s been outstanding in the debates, and I’d love to see him set the tone of the political campaigns. I’ve really got nothing against Romney–or most of the candidates, for that matter. I don’t think Romney’s win is all that significant, though; he was expected to win there, especially running against second- and third-tier candidates (and the Troll Master Ron Paul). I think, though, that Huckabee’s strong showing just might pull him closer to that first tier. I’m sure Sam Brownback’s people are saying the same thing, but they would be wrong.
More at the candidates’ blogs (Huckabee, Romney), Patrick Ruffini at Hugh Hewitt’s, Eye on ‘08, Marc Ambinder, PJM, and of course, Ace and Hot Air.

UPDATE 2: Quote of the day:
The cynic in me would quip that Paul has been so successful in selling his “small government” message that his supporters won’t even participate in anything so Big Government-y as Iowa straw polls.
But that would be rude.
Hey, you sheeple, you can’t say that! Ron Paul is the Only True Conservative™!!!1!
Another priceless quote–Janette just told me in an email that made me almost pass out laughing:
The host on CSPAN said this morning, “And for those of you playing the Ron Paul drinking game, that’s the 73rd time his name has been mentioned this morning. Congratulations guys, you win!” He was obviously irritated by the Paultards relentless campaign to irritate all of us to death.
AAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!! Pwn3d by C-SPAN!
Somebody find me a YouTube clip! You just know some Paultard got lucky and had the TIVO on in case they mentioned the name of their cult leader. They must be rioting in the streets by now!

I like Huckabee as well. Charming, funny, honest, intelligent. Effective, too.
Now will McCain hust please go away?
Mark Krauss says:
I’m voting for the person best suited for the job, elections are not supposed to be popularity contests, and it’s not the electorate’s responsibility to vote for who they think is most popular, but who’s got the best grip on the countries needs of the day. I’m happy to support my former governor, Huckabee.
Mark Krauss says:
by the way I like Fred too, but he worries me by surrounding himself with Bush advisors, the republicans do need to focus on the basics of conservatism, I don’t think all the Bushies in Fred’s campaign make me wonder if there’s any concern for keeping taxes low and cutting wasteful spending.
