Sweet Home Alabama is Fred! Country

Did you expect otherwise?

He still hasn’t officially declared himself a candidate. But in the July poll, 34 percent of those likely to vote in the Feb. 5 Republican primary said they would cast ballots for Thompson if the election were today.

That compares with 20 percent support for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, down from 29 percent in May; 11 percent for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, down from 23 percent; 7 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, down from 15 percent; and 5 percent for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who got 7 percent in May.

Mike Hubbard, chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, said Thompson is “a true conservative.”

Damn, I love this state. We’re With Fred!

Unrelated to Thompson, but still about Presidential politics–last week I had a cardiology appointment for a stress test and EKG. While I was doing the tests, they asked if I wanted the teevee on and I said, yeah, sure. The tech put it on CNN for about two seconds, but they were recapping the Democratic debate and Hillary was talking. She said, “Oh God, it’s Hillary,” and switched it while saying, “you didn’t want to see that, did you?” Obviously my answer was a firm “hell no.” So she put it on Fox News, where Bush was speaking at Charleston AFB. She asked, “Is that OK? Do you want to listen to Bush?” I said yes, and she said, “well, you never know, I’ve had a couple people say they didn’t want to hear him.” A COUPLE people. HA! HAHAHAHAHA!!! So we (the tech and nurse and I) started talking about Bush, and nobody was apologetic or negative in the least. It was lovely. See, I’ve had my Bush-Cheney sticker on my car since late 2002, and it’s still on, never been touched. So do thousands of others in Mobile, although most of them are rockin’ the black W sticker. Alabama IS Bush Country (especially in Mobile). It’s wonderful to live in a place where you’re not harassed by angry Bush-deranged moonbats; in fact, even our Democrats / liberals here are pleasant and easygoing. (GTL is much, much nicer than his mean ol’ Bush-bashing blog would indicate–I’ve met him in person.) :winking:

Contrast that with those poor souls who are living in the snakepits of angry leftardism, who’d risk vandalism if they had Bush stickers on their cars or verbal abuse if they stated their opinions to strangers. Then again, people are just plain nicer down here than anywhere else I’ve lived.

Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
I heard ole Neil put her down
Well I hope Neil Young will remember
Southern man don’t need him around, anyhow

…But wouldn’t it be better for the Republican Party to get a guy like Rudy Guiliani? I think that’d throw a curve ball to the Democrats & put them on the defensive. They would be forced to fight on their own blue state turf with a Republican presidential candidate from New York. Rudy might even be able to carry New York and 3 or 4 other Northeastern states plus Florida too. It also would dampen the perception that the GOP is becoming a party for Southerners/Heartlanders. On the other hand, Thompson might be perceived as just another Republican from an increasingly Southern-based party. He may not give the GOP the comparative advantage that Guiliani would.

Damn right! It is good to be living here, in Alabama.

Though in recent years I have noticed an increase in those pesky little blue dot in a red square stickers you see on the back glass of cars. I see them mostly on Volkswagen Passat’s, Old Volvo’s, and worn out Audi’s. More than likely they are transplant Yankee’s, burnt out hippie relics from the 60’s professor’s from a local university, or are locals who were picked on as a child.

I have been tempted to have a large rubber W stamp made and ink black the ones I see parked in lots across the Birmingham area. Or at the very least, scribble a bold W across them with a jumbo Sharpie. But since I’m not much on trashing other people’s personal property, I refrain from doing so. I’m confident that if I succumb to my temptation just once, my level of personal satisfaction would rise immensely. Perhaps one day the right situation will present itself, and like the great Zorro, I will strike and make my mark!

On a side note, from what I’ve seen so far I’m NOT impressed with Rudi. His presence, delivery of speech, and overall demeanor has been subpar -at best. For the time being I’m with Fred. I really like him. In my opinion, he is the only Republican candidate who has what it takes to win. But, when Newt Gingrich throws his hat in the ring -LOOK OUT- everything will change! There is not another candidate, Republican or Dhimicrat, that can shine his shoe. He is confident, articulate, and over all, his intellect is on a higher plateau than the rest of the playing field.

What the heck is that? You must not live in Mobile. :heehee:

(Seriously, whose sticker is that? I haven’t seen any!)

BTW, I drive a crappy old Volvo. With my Bush sticker! (Hey, what can I say, it used to be a nice car, ten years ago!) I know, I drive a crappy hippie-ish car. That’s why I will never drive that POS car without a Bush/Fred/GOP/whatever sticker on it! :winking:

(hoping that car can’t read my mind, lest it decide not to start again)

Gee Beth, sorry about the Volvo thingy. I didn’t mean to disrespect your ride. :o

Just reporting what I observe. :hangon:

I live close to and ride into Birmingham most everyday day. I mostly see these vile adhesive cancers in the Bohemian section of the Birmingham area (i.e. Southside area).

    Joe,

As a Florida voter, I will vote for either Fred! or Duncan Hunter in the primary (Can I vote twice?). Almost all of the Republicans I know are planning on Fred!. Rudy isn’t even on their radar. There are a few who aren’t decided, so they might vote for Rudy (or Mitt). Don’t know of any who are considering McCain or Ron Paul (who?).

Holy shi’ite, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen!

    Well, almost, anyway.

I guess I have to give the person who invented it some credit–he or she is no doubt a good Republican capitalist, laughing all the way to the bank with leftard money. Heehee.

I’m just glad I haven’t seen that crap here! But yeah, it’s PERFECT for target practice! Or the W Zorro stamp!

I was reading somewhere on Wikipedia that Neil Young and Ronnie Van Zant were actually good friends. Here’s an entry from Wikipedia:

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s fan base continued to grow rapidly during 1973, due in large part to their opening slot on The Who’s Quadrophenia tour in the U.S. Their second album, 1974’s Second Helping, was the band’s breakthrough hit. It featured their most popular single “Sweet Home Alabama” (#8 on the charts in August 1974), a tongue in cheek answer song to Neil Young’s “Alabama” and “Southern Man”. Today, Young claims that he and Van Zant were not rivals, that they were actually fans of each other’s music and good friends, and that they had talked of collaborations together. Neil Young was going to give his song “Powderfinger” to Lynyrd Skynyrd to perform, a fact which Young has never denied. Unfortunately, the Skynyrd plane crash happened just months after that song was penned, leading Neil Young to perform the song himself on his 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. Young has occasionally included the chorus from “Sweet Home Alabama” as a tribute to Skynyrd at his own live concerts, including at Young’s first live performance following Van Zant’s death. Finally, one of the last photos of Ronnie Van Zant prior to his passing features the frontman wearing a Neil Young t-shirt.

In an interview about the song Sweet Alabama, Van Zant was quoted as saying,

We wrote Alabama as a joke. We didn’t even think about it - the words just came out that way. We just laughed like hell, and said ‘Ain’t that funny’… We love Neil Young, we love his music…”

In fact, here’s a photo of Ronnie Van Zant of Lynard Skynard, wearing a shirt with Neil Young on it.

I’m an Alabama residence and I’ve seen the blue dot sticker surprisingly frequently in my area, except around here it’s on nicer cars, not junkers. I actually think it’s pretty clever. BTW, I’m not a Dem and don’t have a sticker. I just think it’s a good idea.

OK, here’s an honest question from a conservative who has abandoned Bush: Can anyone here tell me why Bush is worth supporting? Just curious as to why the 26% of Bush supporters still have faith in this guy. Since this blog is called “My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” I may be just stirring up a hornets nest, but that’s not my intention.

    Red-gretful

Definitely Fred country, says Beth at My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, who posted the above relevant Lynyrd. Much as we are open to Fred, we don’t really know where he is coming from yet, or what sort of candidate he can really be. …

Wow, thanks so much for the kind words, my friend. We’ll have to have another cup of coffee again sometime soon :-)

Also, that was fascinating, the info on the friendship between Neil Young and Skynyrd — always assumed they had a genuine feud going on vs a friendly rivalry…
