The Times They Are A-Changin’: The Goracle Jumps the Shark

Tags: , ,

Sayeth The Goracle, regarding the spread of the religion of Global Warming™:

What’s the old Bob Dylan line? ‘Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call/Rattle your windows’ - what’s the rest of it? - ‘for the times they are a-changin’.

And yet more inspirational words from Albert The Prophet for the faithful:

I remember when I was quite young, and the civil rights movement was beginning, listening to Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ In The Wind. It was unbelievable in its impact. And a lot of the music being written and performed for Live Earth is hopefully going to have the same kind of impact.

Unbelievable, man. How positively baby-boomer-hipster of him.

Unfortunately for St. Goracle, he invoked the name of a much wiser, higher power.

When he was asked by Rolling Stone founder and publisher Jann Wenner in the magazine’s 40th anniversary issue if he worried about global warming, Dylan replied with an unexpected rejoinder. He asked Wenner, “Where’s the global warming? It’s freezing here.”

*snerk* I guess he’ll have to find another 60’s icon to appropriate. I’m sure Neil Young would oblige. :eyeroll:

Bob Dylan–denier, heretic, apostate!

Read all of the three linked pieces above.

Maybe Bob Dylan is little more than an opportunistic fence sitter. Here’s a National parody about him published some time ago in a comic strip called Zimmerman.

So Al jumped the shark. Hope he didn’t land on it, cause that would hurt the poor thing. Then PETA would want to get involved due to violence to animals. Uggghh.

Here’s a question for Right-Wingers. Are you people up in arms against the concept of global warming because a liberal Democrat like Al Gore happens to be a spokesman? What if there were no Al Gore and it happened to be a Republican like Christine Todd Whitman? Or Olympia Snow? Or John McCain? Or Colin Powell? Or Chuck Hagel? All have voiced their concerns about the issue. Would you then be more receptive to the idea that global warming might be a problem? :?: Just curious.

No. I’m against it because it’s become a religion. The science does not back up the grandiose statements being made. Unlike the left, I don’t follow my leaders blindly.

Well, having read some of the arguments by Righties here, you may have some valid points about jumping too quickly to conclusions (see–I don’t always disagree with you people! I’m a very open-minded guy). While it’s quite certain that the earth’s temperatures have been heating up over the past 20 years, I agree, it is not an absolute certainty whether this is a permanent trend or a temporary phenomenon or–what causes it. But…it still makes economic sense to become less dependent upon fossil fuels. And whether or not they heat up the atmosphere, with all the pollution around, less CO2 isn’t such a bad thing, is it? Also, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Democrat like Al Gore or a Republican like John McCain raising concerns about the issue.

Anyway, for better or for worse, here’s Al Gore’s Live Earth Message on YouTube. Enjoy or Destroy.

    Joe says:

Now here’s one of the faithful, who’s taken in Al Gore’s message at heart. But his is far more pessimistic outlook. Now, here’s an entirely opposite view by your favorites, Micheal Crichton. Again, depending upon which side of the fence you’re on…Enjoy…or destroy.

Joe, you really don’t have any idea what “we righties” think on the issue; it’s obvious.

Glad you don’t jump to conclusions, though.

—Well Beth, I’ve done some searching on the YouTube station and found a variety of diverse opinions within the Republican Party on global warming. It seems the GOP is quite divided on the issue. Here are just a few:

    Christine Todd Whitman

    Senator John McCain

    A Mr. A. Schwarzenegger

    Senator Inhofe

    Senator Sam Brownback

    and George W. Bush

    Beth says:

FYI, Joe: I wasn’t asking you what conservatives/Republicans think, so the links are totally unnecessary. But since you see that there is no party line on the issue, UNLIKE ON THE LEFT, where dissent brands you a heretic, then why do you ASSume everyone here thinks a certain thing?
    Are you really that obtuse?

Or are you just being argumentative and provocative to get attention? Because really, it’s a lot easier to just ignore your ASSumptions, and you have yet to leave a comment at any time that wasn’t either an apparent attempt to draw an argument or some other patronizing bullshi’ite. If you disagree with EVERYTHING here and have all these absurd, incorrect preconceived notions about me and everyone else here, why ARE you still here?

And why continue on (other) old threads nobody else is even commenting on any more, as you do? Because you know nobody will argue with you? Because you just want to annoy?

Anyway, YouTube? Are you serious? You know all about what the right thinks because you saw a few videos on YouTube? LOL!

    And this?

But…it still makes economic sense to become less dependent upon fossil fuels.

Are you actually serious? I say again, you obviously have no idea what we’re about, and I honestly don’t even feel like repeating my other blog posts about our need to reduce dependence on oil, a sentiment shared by MOST conservatives–not that you would even begin to understand WHY.

    Christ.

Last but definitely not least, do me a favor: Try to refrain from responding with some patronizing remark or oinking commentary about your “hot” girlfriend or the “hot babes” (your phrase, not mine) that you claim to run with, for a change. That shi’ite doesn’t fly here. Just because this blog is conservative and not called “The ‘I Hate Men’ Feminist Blog,” it doesn’t mean it’s OK to be a pig. (Again, this highlights how very little you know about the people you are addressing. Again, and again, and again.) I wonder if you’d dare to leave such remarks at, say, I Blame the Patriarchy? No? Then what the hell makes you think it impresses anyone here?

    Joe says:

Anyway, YouTube? Are you serious? You know all about what the right thinks because you saw a few videos on YouTube? LOL!

—Well, then if those politicians on YouTube don’t summarize the positions of the Right, then what do they think about global warming? The reason I posted those videos is to dig deeper and to try to understand what they think.

Actually, while I don’t often agree with people on the Right about anything, this time I somewhat agree on one point that Bush brought up on YouTube. That not all data is in to state with absolute certainty that global warming is entirely a man-made phenomenon. It might be, but other factors may at work which influence the weather as well. However, where I disagree with him is that we should sit on our hands, stand by and do nothing. Even the environmentalists are not entirely correct in their assumptions, it’s better to err on the side of caution than to think in 20 years that nothing was done at all. Lowering CO2 emissions can’t hurt anyone. What’s that saying?–an ounce of prevention is like a pound of cure.

And despite what you think–people on the Left don’t always agree with one another. Usually, they don’t brand each other as heretics. You may find it surprising, but we even argue among ourselves. Why, I’ve met self-described liberals who were ardent supporters of the Iraq invasion & think that Bush should bomb Iran. Some are even skeptical about the global warming theories. Those positions appear to be closer to your own and the ones posted in this blog.

BTW, people on the left don’t hate you. More often than not, we just disagree, that’s all. Anyway, c ya.

Really? And what should we use to replace them?

Ethanol? And we get to watch the price of corn go through the roof and everything else that uses it. Also, we don’t gain anything (BTU wise). And it produces more smog than fossil fuels.

Hybrids? Can’t want for all those batteries to be placed. All those heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

The next two hold promise, but don’t eliminate the use of fossil fuels.

Biodiesel? Maybe. It can be made using cast off produce, so certain items (corn) shouldn’t spike price wise.

Diesel/Grease? This one isn’t bad. Simple add-on to existing diesel. Grease is readily available at the local restaurant for free (it cost restaurants to get rid of it).

Compared to other alternative fuel sources, fossil fuels still hold the lead. Hybrids and electrics still have those batteries that will need to be dealt with.

Well raz0r, after talking to current hybrid owners, I plan to buy one by 2012. Taxi drivers tell me they’re just great. A driver’s paradise. They tell 50 mpg at least–and if a Taxi driver can’t give you an honest opinion, then who can? I’ve noticed that when the hybrids stop at the curb, the engine stops running. What could be better than that? No wonder why they save such much on your gas bill. Apparently, the next generation are due out in 2010 and 2012 & they are gonna be leap years ahead of the current one. Cheaper lighter batteries. Probably faster and safer, too.

Yeah, I agree, fossil’ll be here fer a while. Unfortunately, we gotta live with it & pay our tax to the oil companies. So–when the hydrogen cars come out by 2020, I’ll buy those ones an’ do my best ta put the oil execs on welfare.

Y’know, the concerns over global warming may overhyped, but if it leads to an abundance of fuel efficient cars, cleaner air, a better future for our kids, then that’s a positive step. At the same time, while there may be a strong possibility that global warming is man-made & that it should be addressed, I’m also of in some sort of agreement that people can take it too far & start acting real loony about the subject. Those who state that we’re in for floods in every city might find out in 10-25 years that the world is still about the same, that we even a booming economy and the sky didn’t fall. Who knows? The world temperatures might even stabilize. The future isn’t set in stone. So there’s one point I agree—not to become too irrational and keep a level head. Otherwise people can wind up with egg on their faces believing too much in a theory.

    Joe,

Still didn’t address the heavy metals and toxic chemicals that those batteries contain. Initial guestimates give the batteries a 5-6 year life and then they need replacing. Care to guess what that will cost you? The environmental impact? The cries of abuse by the greenies and a call to get rid of batteries.

Well raz0r, you gotta point. Everything has a byproduct, doesn’t it? Gas-smog. Nuclear Power-plutonium. Batteries-acid. Nuthin’s perfect. And yes, the batteries aint cheap. Auto mechanics have indicated this. Still–my mind hearkens back to the day I flew into LA International Airport into a huge blanket of smog. The horizon looked as dirty as your dishwater. It was hard to breathe, too. It’s little wonder that the current governor, a Republican who grew up in the Austrian alps, is taking such a hardline approach to clean up California’s air. And why he is pushing for more fuel efficient cars with low emissions. And why wants to see the wide scale development and use of the Hydrogen car one day.

    Joe says:

The other thing I wanted to say, raz0r, is that I hardly drive anymore because I can barely afford the price of gas these days. I mostly walk now. Heck, gas may as well be gold or Dom Perignon. What used to cost me $10-$15 to fill up the same tank now gets me a 1/4 or 1/3 of that–and I drive a little 3-door that’s better than most. It must be really hard on people who drive Hummers and Explorers that come into the city from the ‘burbs.

Y’know Beth, since ya brought up Al Gore, I thought I’d say how much I like the guy. It’s too bad he didn’t become president back in 2000. Although he was not able to take his rightful place in the White House, at least he’s doin’ his best to improve our world. Whether he & the environmentalists are totally correct about global warming, it just makes sense ta clean up the environment and ta leave a better world for our children. Anyway, thanx fer lettin’ me post my views here. An’ just out a’ courtesy, I’ll try not to leave what ya consider “oinking” comments anymore :pig: lol– As ya say:

    “That shi’ite doesn’t fly here.”

–even though that’s probably how 98% of the male population–liberal or conservative (other than gay men) probably think. lol. You know what they say–”every man’s a dog and then there’s a stray one.”

Despite your sometimes ‘potty-mouth’ commentary & our diametrically opposing views, I find that your salty tongue and style of penmanship go well together. Sometimes it can be quite funny. And now when I think about it–your writing reads a lot like Southern lingo. Reminds me a lot of my travels down South–people there were quite friendly, but I didn’t want to get on the wrong side of the tracks with them. They seemed to have strong opinions about everything and kinda hotheaded too. But maybe that was just first impressions. I dunno.

Anyway, I leave you with a video clip from one of my favorite C&W singers, Patsy Cline. C ya. Have a nice day.
