Internet Explorer is the Effing Antichrist

Pardon my American for just a second here, but maybe I need to just start coding for IE and pretend that no other browsers exist. Goddamn piece o’shi’ite farking farked up shi’itenozzle browser!!! Thank you, Bill Gates, for reminding me that I am most certainly NOT Dan Cederholm/Simon Collison/[insert web design master here] (like I farking needed reminding?!). F–k you.
:1guns: INTERNET EXPLORER MUST DIE!!!! :1guns:
I should note that my mood is most definitely NOT helped by the fact that I’ve had to reboot motherfarking Windoze three times tonight. Here I come, Ubuntu (Apple, if I had the big bucks). GRRRRRRRRR!
:fist:

Lord Nazh says:
Why in the hell are you using IE?
Firefox of Flock and you’ll be ok.
Bill says:
Beth, I know IE is a pain, but Linux ain’t heaven, either. Going that route, you will find (or not find) even more undocumented arcana than in Windows. My best suggestion for life with Windows is: XP SP2, and at least 1GB of RAM. 2GB is better. I’m running XP SP2 on an Athlon with 3GB of RAM, and have no problems with the OS, and certainly don’t need to reboot, other than in very strange circumstances.
My best suggestion for compatibility with IE and FF is to use HomeSite or DreamWeaver, and run their checks on the HTML for compatibility issues.
FWIW, I’ve flirted with Linux for over a decade, but still haven’t seen one I could live with for desktop work. YMMV.
phineas g. says:
Me I loves me some Linux.
Two brands in particular for desktop purposes: SuSE and Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE Desktop). Sadly I’ve also found that there are programs on Uncle Bill’s OS that I can’t live without.
If you’re seriously thinking about the switch I’d recommend trying out Wubi. It’ll install Ubuntu as an application and when you reboot you can choose to start up in either Windows or Ubuntu (once you get it installed you can replace Gnome with KDE if you want).
Not to be argumentative, but for HTML / CSS / design compatibility HomeSite / DreamWeaver and the other canned HTML design suites suck. Especially when you’re doing design in for a CMS (Wordpress / Drupal / MT / etc…). At best you’ll get heavily bastardized code that is full of bloat.
Regretfully getting used to the Mozilla / IE will be a PIA until IE6 dies a long over due death. IE7 is a bit better, but won’t be perfect until they start the browser over from scratch (or at least adhere to web standards).
Of course Ms. Beth if you have any questions you know where to find me. Hell, I’ll even keep my pants on.
Joe says:
You should get a Mac. I bought an Intel MAC last year and it works great. I’ve even got it running Windows & better than a PC. It’s never crashed once running XP. I even installed LINUX–it works great. That’s like having 3 computers for the price of one. I can run them all at the same time. I just click between the different windows & it switches operating systems automatically. There are too many incompatibilies on a PC, parts that were mixed and matched that don’t work together properly. OS X ROX! :hey:
The Jump Blog » Blog Archive » Ubuntu Part Deux says:
[...] I see the Beth at My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy is considering Ubuntu, so I thought I’d post some thoughts. I’ve been using Linux since about 1999 but up until this year I have never found a Linux distro that I felt had any chance of gaining any appreciable share of the desktop market. They were simply too technical for even advanced users. Lots of command line, lots of restrictions on what worked out of the box due to the Open Source philosophy that kept Linux ideologically pure but impractical. 3D accelerated video was a pain to get working correctly; mp3 and DVD support was not enabled out of the box; streaming web media couldn’t be played without additional configuration. [...]
GoldFalcon says:
Hey Beth,
I have to agree with some of the sentiments Bill expressed. I’ve been fiddling around with Linux since about 99 and it is sometimes no cakewalk either. That said, of all the distros Ubuntu comes the closest to being painless and has been the easiest to get working the way that I want in a timely fashion. From inserting the disk to “now it’s how I want it” took about an hour and a half.
I put a demo video of my desktop in operation up over at my blog, you can check it out and see what you think.
Janette says:
You aren’t this stressed out over my site are you? Forget about it! I told you, people who surf in IE get what they deserve!
agent bedhead says:
Janette always knows the right thing to say. :shades:
Mark says:
I have to agree with Bill. I’m using XP pro SP2 with 4gb of ram for Photoshop work. IE7 is working fine for me now. It was giving me fits because of conflicts with the antivirus, antispyware software I was running. I had to reboot every few hours. I changed that and all is wonderful. Firefox can crash your machine, too. Anyway you will have to write for IE because that’s what most of your viewers are using. Apple sucks.
Beth says:
NEVER! Just have to test design in it, ’cause like Mark said, most people use it. (No, Janette, it’s not your site–your stuff was easy; it took no time at all!)
Phinny, I wouldn’t touch Dreamweaver with a ten-foot pole. I’ve got enough problems without that (or worse, Windows Expression Web–blech!) making more for me.
OK, so maybe Linux isn’t the answer yet. I don’t need more headaches. I DO need more RAM; I’ve only got 1GB on this laptop and I’ll be damned if I know how to upgrade RAM on a laptop.
How many programmers does it take to change a lightbulb?
None–that’s what tech support is for. :clueless:
Beth says:
OK, GoldFalcon? That video kicks butt! Now I WANT Linux! (
(Still kinda scary, though.)
One other thing that spooks me from Linux is actually Firefox–sometimes I think Open Source is overrated (as Goldfalcon’s post would indicate). Firefox is a farking MESS now; it crashes regularly. I switched to Opera but it’s got its own set of issues, mainly my dependence on FFX extensions and Greasemonkey scripts. I’m using some G’monkey scripts with Opera, but some of them really fuck things up in Opera. Not all, but some of the ones I really wanted to use. It’s definitely not running like a clean install, that’s for sure.
Maybe I’ll give Flock another go, although I wonder if it’s gotten as flaky as Firefox. :sigh:
Beth says:
So I hear…and I’m drooling for a MacBook Pro. It’s just too expensive, especially since I just got this laptop a year ago.
Wait…OMG, I just realized my stupid Gravatar is finally working! Yay!
Andy says:
Have you tried posting your code on the SitePoint forums? I’d be happy to have a look if you post a link to someplace where you’ve posted your code =)
Beth says:
Hi Andy, thanks. Nah, I haven’t posted it anywhere. Call it a crisis of confidence. Others call it stubbornness. ;-) I’ve got phin (comment #3) & Co. for the extra eyes, though. I’m just a cluetard with certain CSS elements.
LindaSoG says:
Oh Gosh but I loves ya Beth…
that said, after a year of you shoving firefox down my throat, and just when I think you might be right, all of sudden it ain’t all that great anymore?
bah.
ATTENTION WORLD: there is no perfect browser, and no perfect OS and no perfect coders either.
so there. neener neener neener.
John says:
Beth, Apple had a program for students that granted a discount on a Mac. The discount was open to College, High School, Middle School, etc. Also, Apple’s website has factory reconditioned Macs available with a full warrenty. I hope this info might help! I love your site.
Wild Thing says:
I am so sorry Beth. I wish I could help, but you are much smarter about
all this stuff then I will ever be. But I am here for you if there is
anything I might be able to do. At leastI can cheer you on when it works
great and scream with you when it messes up. That I can do.
Love ya!!!!!
beth says:
I was going to ask why you are using IE but you already answered that.
I think you are the one that got me started using FireFox and I use it exclusively now - but a lot of blogs/websites don’t show up well in FF. But then a lot don’t show up well in IE.
I wish I could help, but like Wild Thing said - you’re a lot smarter with that stuff than I am. I’ll cheerlead with Wild Thing. Or cuss IE if that’ll help.

 Abbs-sew-lute-lee the most wonderful, heartfelt, sincere, comprehensive, concise acknowledgment of Microsquish’s browser & OS I’ve ever read!!
Beth, you’re a hero in Linuxland before you’ve even booted your 1st Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Edubuntu!!
Cheers, Code Clueless but Hardware Handy Lance!
:clueless: :smug:
raz0r says:
Beth,
I’ve mentioned before I’d help you get Linux up and running (Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, Fedora). I’ve been using Linux for my desktop for at least a decade now. I’ll even help you get Beryl running. That’s the fancy windowing deal you saw in GoldFalcon’s vid. Vista’s Aero can’t even begin to do what that does without a great deal of vid ram. If you like Beryl, then you’ll like Looking Glass 3D also.

Adding RAM to a laptop ain’t difficult. Usually just a screw on the bottom and take off a cover plate. What brand/model is it? Do not reply back with Dell.

Hello, Beth:
I’m trying Ubuntu installed with Wubi as phineas has told you before. It goes reasonably although I have not succeeded in playing DVDs but the rest of the programs go way better than in Windows. You can download it from here.
Hope that helps you.
