Royal Flush: Sarkozy Wins

The French people have flushed the tired “Old Europe” socialist politics of Segolene Royal, electing Nicolas Sarkozy by an approximate margin of 53 to 47 percent. As I write this, Sarkozy is speaking, and it’s being broadcasted stateside on CSPAN. Sarkozy: “Our American friends can count on us.”
PARIS - Energized French voters chose Nicolas Sarkozy as their new president on Sunday, giving the U.S.-friendly conservative a comfortable margin for victory and a mandate for change, result projections from four polling agencies showed. His Socialist opponent conceded minutes after polls closed.
The agencies said the conservative won 53 percent of the vote amid massive turnout, dashing Socialist Segolene Royal’s hopes of being elected France’s first woman president. The projections were based on vote counts from representative samples of hundreds of polling stations across the country.
Voter turnout was projected a 85 percent — a level not seen in 40 years — thanks to the dynamism of both candidates and the high stakes for a nation losing global clout to neighbors Britain and German and even developing countries like China and India.
Allez Sarko!
LGF asks, How Many Cars Will Be Torched? :snicker: The BBC:
More than 3,000 police have been deployed in Paris and its multi-ethnic suburbs in case Mr Sarkozy’s victory sparks a repeat of the riots seen in 2005.
No Pasarán has more about the election, including this:
34 cars (including a police car) were torched in the Paris area on Saturday night before Sunday’s election.
Also see E-nough, where there are plenty of Zombie-style photos of the Socialists. Sarkozy Derangement Syndrome! The Left is deranged everywhere.
Fausta has more as well, including video.
Pajamas Media has reports from Nidra Soller in Paris.
I feel inspired to go buy something French today. :cheese:
(I can’t even get to the Sarkozy website any more–it’s too busy!)
UPDATE: As expected…
Mohamed Mechmache, President of AC Le Feu — an association created following the November 2005 riots, has ominously warned that “France did not understand the message sent during the riots in October and November of 2005.”
…
Firemen in the south of Lille have answered 20 alarms for torched vehicles.
And at the Place de la Bastille:
Riot police in Paris fired tear gas into crowds which gathered after Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential election victory.
The disturbances happened at the Place de la Bastille, a popular hub for demonstrations and strikes.
Up to 300 rioters, some of whom were masked, made running attacks on riot police who took up positions at the entrance to boulevards leading onto the square.
Earlier a small crowd of protesters, brandishing black and red anarchist flags, set fire to an effigy of Sarkozy in the square before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it.
Again, No Pasarán has more–photos of the rioting at the Place de la Bastille here.
“Let the finger-pointing begin!”

There’s a big question in my mind as to whether any government in “old Europe” can succeed as long as they are captive to the Euro Monetary Union’s overly tight monetary policies.

So a mooselimb is saying that the Fwench didn’t know what they were voting for. He mentions the
“misunderstood youths”islamic youths that torched how many cars for his argument. Fine. I think that just shows that the people knew exactly what they were doing. Socialism got them there. More of it was not going to fix it.
