In a stunning display of short-sightedness, the Army has decided to silence its best “reporters,” the military bloggers. Everything I’ve got to say has already been said elsewhere, so if you want a summary of milblogger reaction, hit Small Wars Journal for a roundup of links. Pay particular attention to the posts at Blackfive and MilBlogs.
YES, I KNOW there are issues with OPSEC that must be addressed, but this is ridiculous. Still no indication of whether the other services will be doing the same, although I suspect they won’t.
Read them while you still can–here’s a list of milblogs from Iraq, and a list of milblogs from Afghanistan.
UPDATE, via Small Wars Journal and email from Raven, at Captain’s Quarters:
The Army has issued a clarification on this order.
…What does this mean? It means that bloggers will get trained in OpSec rules and regulations, and then allowed to police their own conduct. The key word here is “trust”. The Army got this right today.
Now, the question is whether Wired got it wrong in the first place.
Good. That’s exactly how it should have been in the first place–more emphasis on OPSEC.

That update is good news. I was concerned that the voices were going to be silenced.
