Prayers for Tony Snow

I’m just sick about this.

WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Tony Snow is once again stricken with cancer after doctors found a cancerous growth in his lower abdomen, the White House announced Tuesday.

Snow is expected to return to his job at the White House after treatment, spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.

I know they said they expect him to be OK, but as with Elizabeth Edwards’ recurrence, it’s never easy, and such things certainly don’t come without bringing a lot of stress. Been there, done that, got the scars. I knew I’d be OK too when my shi’ite returned, but you still have that battle ahead and it’s never pleasant. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be in either of their shoes right now, but I can’t help putting myself there mentally. It’s something every survivor thinks about–”will it come back?”–and then you get The News™. I imagine there are millions of cancer survivors thinking about it a lot lately, with the news of Cathy Seipp having succumbed to lung cancer and Elizabeth Edwards and Tony Snow finding recurrences.

All I can do is pray for their physical and mental strength and for an eventual cure.

These four words are perhaps the most dreaded that any cancer survivor can hear.

And in less than a week, two prominent figures on the national political scene received this news from their doctors.

I wish him the best of luck too– liver cancer claimed my father in 03. But he survived six years after diagnosis, three of them without treatment. One tough old bastard. I hope Snow has some of that in him.
