This post is for you two IE6 users out there: IE6 Sucks, Part 8,343,097
- Posted by Beth on January 5th, 2007 filed in Blogs, General, Pseudogeek stuff
OK, I give up. I have to change the site layout again because apparently people who are still using IE6 (God only knows why, but I digress) are having problems with the Vistered Little theme. Yeah, I know the holidays are over–I’ve got to update the other themes a little to get rid of old shi’ite and hide some of the clutter before I switch back to one of them.
Speaking of browsers, I tried Flock, and it’s pretty damn good. It’s almost Firefox–in fact, it’s based on Firefox, it uses Firefox extensions, but it also integrates Flickr and/or Photobucket so you can drag and drop pictures. And do other stuff, but I haven’t dug into it much yet. I just haven’t been able to get the Greasemonkey scripts working (yet) so I’m sticking with Firefox until then. (I cannot, will not surf teh intertubes without my Greasemonkey scripts and all my FFX extensions!)
You IE6 users (ahem…you two three know who you are)–here you go:
IE7 download (and a review so you can read more about it from another unbiased source)
It won’t hurt you to TRY them, y’know. If you aren’t willing to upgrade IE yet and don’t like Firefox, try out Opera. I promise you’ll like it. It’s fast, it looks better than any browser; it would be perfect if they had as many “add-ins” as Firefox does (they don’t, which makes it frustrating for an extensions/scripts addict like me). Since you don’t use any of that stuff with IE, you won’t miss them anyway–but you will find some you’ll like.
I mean personally, I don’t really care what browser you use, I’m just sayin’. IE 7 is way, way better than IE6, and Opera is about a gigazillion times better. I know some people don’t like Firefox, and I won’t push it since everyone else already does. But IE6 is a bloody nightmare for site design for n00bs like me!!! (If I didn’t know you two IE6ers so well, I’d just say farkit and let this site suck in IE6.) Even heinous AOHell is better!
So anyway, I’m gonna be busy today fixing up themes to get rid of old shi’ite and stuff. Too much clutter. Maybe I’ll just use yet another one altogether. Right now I am loving this one, but I can see people not liking the content background. What are y’all’s thoughts? Anyone?
P.S. AMEN! (Just had to throw that in there.)

Something... and Half of Something says:
This is not a blog war!
It’s a browser war. From my December, 2006 stats, it would appear that there might be a few more than three of us still using IE6. Yannow, the whole browser thing just ticks me off. I tried Firefox last year…
Tammy says:
I like it, Beth. But I agree, I can hear people yoodling about the background and it being hard to read. What if you muted it to be a bit lighter….or replaced that background altogether with something lighter? Just a thought. :)
And I promise to continue to use Firefox, IE anything gives me a headache!
seejanemom says:
Say, when you get your cables untangled, could you find a weeeee tiny spot on your blogroll for my sorry ass?
I have loved (and lurked)your site since before I ventured into this blogging hell….and when I FINALLY FIGURED OUT THAT I WAS ONLY SHOWING TEN of the blogs in my typelist, the rest of it MIRACULOUSLY LOADED when I clicked “show all”. DUH.
You are way ahead of the tech curve compared to me, but I would hope you could stop by for un momento to see if I’m WOOOORTHEEE.. ;)
Miss your stuff good luck and hurry back!
C.Jane
Beth says:
Jane, I thought you were on my blogroll! I can’t believe it wasn’t! I assure you, I have definitely “seen Jane mom” and you’re more than worthy!
Tammy, if you’re still using the Vistered theme, you can change the background. Just click the little square thumbnails at the top of the page until you find one you like. (Some only look good on smaller screens, and I don’t know if there even is a way to set a default–if there is, I haven’t found it yet.)
Tammy says:
:) Vistered works fine for me, I was talking about the blue template you linked to, the one you said you were considering.
And you didn’t see me…I’m supposed to be working, but it’s slow and I don’t have anything to do, lol.

I feel your pain Beth. I’ve been using Google Analytics to track a whole bunch of stats about my blog, and the browser version is killing me.
80% of people who hit my blog use IE. Of that 80%, a full 67% are using IE 6.0. 31% are using 7.0, and the rest are using crap so outdated it hardly is worth mentioning.
15% of the people are using Firefox, with another 2% using Opera.
The only good news as I see it, is at least 66% are running 1024×768 or higher. 99% have Java, and the majority have at least flash 8.
I don’t know if this technical drivel will help you with your theme dev, but if it does you might want to see if you can sign up for Google Analytics.

Hey look, Beth. Only 354 days left until Christmas!
Wild Thing says:
Not sure if I am one of the two or one of the three:roll:
I really am sorry if it is hard for you to see my blog the way it is though.
Here are my stats
http://www.theodoresworld.net/pics/0107/statsAnimation3.gif
One day I will get IE7,it might be right away, it might be months from now I don’t know. It will be when my computer tech says the glitches are out of it. I am not good enough with computers to take those glitches out by myself and the stress of dealing with all that is just too much for me to handle.
I always feel so bad when I have to ask for help in something, I hate bothering friends with that stuff. Maybe that’s weird I don’t know. If I did IE7 now on my own and had a clitch I would freak out and then not be able to ask for help. haha
I will call my computer tech guy today and ask if IE7 is better yet. I am just terrified to put it on and then have a computer nightmare begin. I don’t mind paying for help from his company, but if I can just wait till it is without the complaints about IE 7 I have heard a lot about then I can do it without the added nightmare.
raz0r says:
What is this IE6 and 7 of which you speak? Does the IE stand for Inferior Experience when surfing the innertubes?
And I like the ICE theme.
raz0r says:
And I got new toys in at work. New Macs with 2GB of Ram. Yay me. Sorry. Kids have been watching too much Suite Life.
Now to sneak one of those babies into my office to keep my Linux desktop company.
agent bedhead says:
Ice Ice Baby.
Mark says:
Beth, you are so smart! MVRWC is displaying correctly in IE7 today, while it would NOT yesterday for some reason. I tried out the IE7 beta some months ago and it was a disaster - had to go back to IE6. IE7 seems to be ready for prime time now.
WIllMacc says:
OK! I admit I was one of the 3!
I use Firefox for everything.. I just wanted you to know what it was doing.. Sorry about that..
Be aware that Flock uses IE for it’s browser engine (if I remember right)..
Opera is a great browser and free now. Avant Browser also uses IE’s browser engine, but in my opinion works better that IE.
I tried IE7, but had some pretty bad problems with it playing nice with other programs.
LindaSoG says:
Wait just a cotton picking minute there Mark, did you say what I thought you said?
Did you say that the site wouldn’t display right in IE7 yesterday?
Beth says:
Y’all, I’m not bitching at you, I’m bitching about what a pain in the ass version 6 is. I just wish NOBODY used it.
Linda, I checked it repeatedly in IE7, and most of my readers are IE users too, but IE7 users. It’s only been IE6 users who have had issues. (I don’t have IE6 now since I upgraded.) It is a common problem with site design issues, though–to the point where a lot of people auto-detect IE users and have separate style sheet sets for different browsers. I don’t have teh skillz to do that, and that particular theme is a free one I downloaded from the Wordpress theme site anyway. Tons of people use it.
Here’s a comparison done by Extreme Tech (although in fairness, this is old-ish so they were testing beta versions).
Mark says:
God’s truth, LindaSog, not on my machine. I rebooted after installing IE7, cleared out cookies, did a boot drive cleanup, ran my antivirus/spyware/malware programs……and the displays did not want to change themes reliably and the page width was abou twice as wide as my screen. I did another couple of reboots and no joy.
Today I’m viewing “Geek Girl” and all is fine. I’ll do some theme changes just for the heck of it
Mark says:
Rats! Vistered Little is a blow out and will not display properly in IE7 for me.
Wild Thing says:
Beth, ok I called the company that does my computer for me when I get into trouble. They told me that half their business is from users of IE 7. They are going to email me as soon as it will be ok to change to IE7. I have been with them for years and they are great about keeping in touch with me about stuff. I just wanted to let you know.
When that day comes can we have a party or something? Pretty please. I have been waiting along time to upgrade when it isn’t so full of glitches.
Beth says:
Argh! It worked for me and for everyone else I asked!
I’d say “I give up,” but I already did.
Wild Thing, I’m game for a party any day!

I’m not too thrilled with IE 7 or IE 6, Firefox is number 1 in my book, wild thing, what are friends for? no need to be bashful, I’m sure you’ve got friends who would help u out, download and install firefox, it is the smoothest running browser I’ve ever used, and you can customize it about any way you want to, I’ve read enough of your work to know you’ve got more brains than I do, if I can, you can.

Beth says:
Dude, that is awesome!
I think I’ll set up a page here to redirect to, with links to a theme that does work in the old browsers.
Eh, prolly not. Sounds like work. (I can’t kick all my IE traffic away to Mozilla, but that cracks me up!)
Mark says:
Are we having fun, Beth?
One of the tech guys at my ISP told me IE7 performance and stability can be machine specific, and to wait a couple of months until upgrading it - while MS got the bugs out of it. There are software compatability problems. Well, that was a couple of months ago. It certainly isn’t your fault MS peddles cr*p. It is funy MVRWC is the only site it will not play with. That will no doubt get worked out. Vister is a nice design, but I’m happy with Geek Girl.
For all the anti-MS, Firefox fans, there are problems with Firefox and other browsers. Firefox has a memeory leak problem, and from what I read at Misha’s, 2.0 won’t play with some other software. There are some advantages, also.
Beth says:
I’ve put up some new themes (check the theme switcher). They do NOT all play well (especially Sapphire, which is killing me with the stupid widgets), but for those who want to check ‘em out, they’re there. I haven’t worked with them enough yet to get them all completely friendly across all browsers, but if you wanna play around with them, go for it. “Ice” and “Crimson Milk” are (so far) looking good, though, although I haven’t done anything with the Ice sidebar.
LANCE says:
LIKE YOUR NEW THEMES!!
GOT LOCKED IN SAPPHIRE & CAN’T GET OUT. NO THEME SWITCHER IN SAPPHIRE, YET!!
USING FIREFOX 1.5 WITH KANOTIX 2005-01 (LINUX) WILL BE UPGRADING TO FIREFOX 2.0 IN NEAR FUTURE.
ALSO TRIED YOUR SITE IN THE ‘KONQUEROR’ BROWSER (PART OF KDE DESKTOP IN LINUX). CAME UP IN ‘ICE’ THEME & WORKED OK, BUT WOULDN’T CHANGE TO GEEK GIRL OR VISTERED. NOT A PROBLEM, KONQUEROR IS THE FUSSIEST BROWSER IN THE WORLD!!
I KNOW YOUR WORKING ON THESE ‘GLITCHES’. ISN’T CODING & DEBUGGING FUN!!!
ALSO WANT TO GET OPERA AGAIN. REALLY LIKED IT LAST YEAR.
CHEERS, BIONIC LANCE:shock:
