Saddam Hussein verdicts - SADDAM SENTENCED TO DEATH

As of right now (0250 Central), four of Saddam’s seven co-defendants have been sentenced; three have been sentenced to 15 years in prison, one–Taha Yassin Ramadan–sentenced to life in prison.

Fox News is covering this live, and I’m just trying to keep up. I’ll update as things progress.

Forgot to mention — Ramsey Clark was kicked out of today’s proceedings. LOL.

The head of Iraq’s former Revolutionary Court has been sentenced to death by hanging. (Awad Hama Badar al-Bandar.)

SADDAM HUSSEIN SENTENCED TO DEATH!

“Guilty of crimes against humanity”–as if the world didn’t already know! Sentenced to death by hanging; death penalties are automatically sent to appeal. Whatever; he’s not getting off. Saddam wants the firing squad; says hangings are for “common criminals” (as opposed to…? honorable criminals?).

Barzan Ibrahim al-Hasan, Saddam’s half-brother, also sentenced to death by hanging.

Iraqi people still aren’t seeing this on TV yet–going to check Iraq the Model & other Iraqi blogs…

BBC:

He (Saddam) was found guilty over his role in the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shia town of Dujail in 1982.

His co-defendant former judge Awad Hamed al-Bander was also sentenced to death. Former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan got life in jail.

Three others received 15 year prison terms, another official was acquitted.

Right now Saddam’s up to his usual courtroom antics, arguing, refusing to stand–now he’s shouting, raising hell. Nothing new. The judge is reading the sentence through the ruckus, anyway. Saddam: “May God curse the agents of the invaders, allahu akbar, blah blah blah…” “You do not decide, you are agents for the occupation, you are traitors! Enemies of the Iraqi people! Death to the enemy of the people!” Saddam is funny. Like point-and-laugh funny. And loud as hell.

Oh, now one of his lackeys is yelling too. OK, I’m guessing the judge is just going to keep reading stuff, and the convicts (ha!) are going to have their tirades. The correspondent in Baghdad (Fox News) is reporting sporadic gunfire, presumably celebratory gunfire, upon announcement of the verdict. We’ll see how things go…

Just checked ITM, Zeyad, Mesopotamian (Alaa), Iraqi Bloggers Central, Star from Mosul, Neurotic Iraqi Wife, and some others–even idiot Riverbend. Nothing (as of 0340 Central time). ITM and Neurotic Wife both had stuff posted yesterday, so look to them first for updates on this.

Fox has the loud banner up:

Saddam Hussein guilty, sentenced to death

Friends of Saddam CNN:

Saddam Hussein guilty, sentenced to death

More coverage:

P.S. I blame Bush!
(Dare I look at the NY Times’ spin on this?)

UPDATE: Mohammed of Iraq the Model has his reaction posted at Pajamas Media.

I think Sandmonkey speaks for (most of!) the world when saying, “Adios, Asshole!”

It couldn’t happen to a nicer mass mudrering monster!

Let’s hope Iraq dispenses with some of that famous Arabic swift justice. The sooner that butt-pimple of a man has stopped wasting my precious oxygen, the better.

I knew this was going to happen. First they catch him or kill him (I think they’d rather have killed him), then it’s off to the Show Trial where only limited charges are brought and no new light is cast on his regime, and it’s off to a quick hanging. Hands washed and dried. Now, I know the conservative voters are too stupid and incurious to feel this way, but don’t the rest of us want to hear what this man has to say? Don’t we want full investigations of all his allegedly nefarious activities? What about the UN/Oil For Food scandal (I thought you sleazy, lying cons at least cared about that!)? Anybody curious? Don’t we want to know what was really going on in Saddam’s Iraq - the weapons, the oppression, the corruption? No? I mean, sure, we know that we have to take his words for what they’re worth, but don’t we want to at least hear them? What about his alleged ties to terrorists, stupid farkin’ cons? Wouldn’t we want to hear what he has to say about that? No? Afterall, Iraq is the “Central Front” in the idiotic “War on Terror,” isn’t it?

    Sheesh.
