Is the Tide Turning in the 2006 Campaign?
One big reason for the new energy we’re seeing among Republicans is the realization of what the congressional leadership will look like if Democrats win back the House. It seems clear that Americans have glimpsed a future with the San Francisco values of Nancy Pelosi third in line for the presidency, and they don’t like what they see.
And who could blame them? The following is just a sampling of Nancy Pelosi’s voting record on issues that are critical to mainstream Americans. Pelosi voted:
* NO on the Border Security Bill
* NO on making the Republican tax cuts permanent
* NO on eliminating the marriage penalty
* NO on eliminating the death tax
* NO on creating Health Savings Accounts
* NO on the Defense of Marriage Act
* NO on the 1996 Welfare Reform Law (and NO on its reauthorization)
* NO on protecting the Pledge of Allegiance
* NO on banning partial-birth abortion
* NO on requiring a photo I.D. to ensure only legal voters vote
* NO on the Patriot Act
* NO on authorizing domestic tracking of terrorists
* NO on military tribunals and new interrogation rules for terrorist detainees

I think Newt is probably right with the his presumption that the GOP will keep the Senate, but not because of any “new energy.” The GOP did see a little resurgence in polls about a month ago, but that has since gone the way of the dodo. The reason they will keep the senate is because the Democrats running close in the South have not been able to pull away and most likely those that haven’t made up their minds yet will vote Republican on election day. Now this may not be the case, but simple probability says that the Dems will gain seats, but won’t win the Senate. The House is a whole other ball game.

Nancy Pelosi DIDN’T vote to send us into a war ill-conceived and poorly prosecuted. It is not surprising that so many Republican losers are running against Pelosi instead of their own lousy records. The Dems don’t have a cogent plan for fixing the mess our country is in. But suppose you hired a plumber to fix a leaky pipe and came home to a house knee deep in sewage, a huge service bill and the plumber on the kitchen floor with a pipe wrench up his butt. You wouldn’t have a plan either, but hopefully you’d know enough to hire a new plumber.
