Will we ever have normal elections again?

John Fund is calling it “Litigation Day,” saying that “Control of Congress may be decided in the courts, starting Nov. 8.”

Everyone is speculating about which party will control Congress after next month’s voting. But we may not know for a while. We could see either party pursue the kind of lawsuits that Al Gore unleashed in Florida in 2000 and contest any number of tight races that are within the “margin of litigation.” Recounts and even seating challenges in Congress could stretch on for weeks–another endless election. “We’re waiting for the day that pols can cut out the middleman and settle all elections in court,” jokes the political newsletter Hotline.

“In 2000 in Florida, we broke a psychic barrier,” says Doug Chapin, director of the nonpartisan Election Reform Information Project. “Election night is not necessarily the finish line anymore. Both sides are lawyering up.” Indeed, in 1998 the number of court cases challenging elections totaled 104, by 2004 that number had climbed to 361.

You know the drill, read the whole thing.

Remember the good old days when you’d just go vote and the results were announced in the early hours of the next day? I really, really hate this business with lawyers going in and challenging every damn vote. It smacks of childish sore-loserism. (Thanks, Al Gore!) But more importantly, the Hotline’s “joke” about all elections being settled it court doesn’t seem all that far off.

Have you gone dumpster-diving at Kos or the DU or any of the other fever swamps lately? Diebold and caging and voter suppression are all the rage (literally) these days. They’re already virtually pronouncing the elections a fraud before Election Day. Can you imagine how it’s gonna be if the Republicans DO maintain control of Congress? They really do believe that anyone who’s positive about the GOP’s chances must “know something” about some sinister plot. Remember last week’s story about how Bush and Rove were “upbeat” about the elections, and how that provoked at least one moonbat to say it’ll be time to “take to the streets?” Of course! The only way Republicans (er, Rethugs) could possibly win is by election fraud. Apparently optimism and confidence are concepts completely foreign to the left. (Yeah, I know; the lack of such pretty much defines the left, hence the deranged hatred for Reagan and Bush.) And more to the point, I think they’re so well-versed in election fraud after all these years that they just ASSume that’s how everyone does it. Election “projection,” indeed.

Oh, and just in case, the nutroots is working on another Brilliant Scheme™–Google bombing the elections. Yeah, that’s a really ethical way to do it–Google bomb a smear campaign (copy here). LOL. When you lose on the issues, win on teh internets, just in case the lawyers can’t do it for you! :roll:
