This explains a lot of the anti-George Allen venom

I’m sitting here 3,000 miles away, reading about the Allen campaign in the Washington Post, National Review, and the Wall Street Journal, and I’m just wondering…why?
I’m in Alabama and reading the same things, and I don’t have a dog in Allen’s fight, either–at least not in 2006. But I do know George Allen from Adam–I’ve been on the record for two years saying he’s my favorite for 2008. I know why we’re hearing about his Senate campaign.

That’s a snapshot taken from The Polling Report, and it shows that from this
Gallup Poll. June 26-29, 2006. Sample was randomly drawn from Gallup’s nationally representative household panel, which was originally recruited through random selection methods.
George Allen’s numbers were showing (at least in June) 29% of Republicans and GOP-leaners “unsure” about Senator Allen. That’s 29 percent of Republicans/leaners that don’t know enough about him to decide–and are ripe for negative “campaigning” at this early date. (Here is Senator Allen on the issues, for those who don’t know.)
Now of course, the smear campaign is out there to deflect from a weak candidate, Jim Webb, but is there any doubt that the smear campaign gets the kind of media attention it does because of the potential Allen candidacy in 2008? The Democratic party machinery is in gear already, because they recognize the threat. Is there any doubt that it’s worked?
For the record, I haven’t changed my mind about 2008, and I’m determined to at least change Martin’s mind.

I’m sitting here listening to Dennis Prager going over the Allen thing, and yea, tiresome. He’s a good guy.
