Armitage the Backstabber
Lost in all the excitement over Jon Benet and Katrina flagellation could be one of the most pernicious acts of political backstabbing in a generation. It occurred to me this morning that the Plame kerfluffle may very well have been a kind of conspiracy–or at least a little payback from one Cabinet member to his President.
Yep. It’s appalling. I keep reading people saying, “Oh, it was just Armitage. He’s not political.” as though he’s just some hapless boob bureaucrat who–what, “forgot” that he said something? While all the Plame hysteria was going on? Not even close. Why does this farkin’ guy get a pass?
Funny how that works. Oppose the Bush Doctrine? Don’t bother with the arguments for your side of the issue; just attack the people, play dirty tricks. (Have you seen all the ridiculous mud-slinging books out there lately?) Don’t worry about being attacked or even refuted in return, either–we (the media) will protect you.

I agree that Armitage deserves a lot of blame for sitting on the sidelines and letting this thing play out after his initial screw up but I also think that his co-conspirators deserve a lot of attention. Powell is just as much to blame for letting this thing play out while he knew damn well that his guy screwed up and even worse, George Tenet is the one that really got the ball rolling by sending that letter to the WH demanding to know whether or not the law had been broken… AFTER it was known that the leaker was from State. Thanks for letting me stay on after the catasrophic intelligence failure that was 9/11, dubya. Here, let me return the favor! How’s that shiv in your back feel? Comfy?
