Dell to recall 4.1 million laptop batteries

Bad news for a company who missed their earnings projections 2 quarters in a row.
They’re an interesting company. Some things they do very well.
Customer service ain’t one of em.
We here in central Texas (Dell is just a ways down the road) kid that Michael Dell moved his customer service operations to New Delhi cause none of you could understand our accents.
It’ll be interesting to see how they handle this.
And by interesting, I mean a complete pain in the ass.

I stopped buying Dell gear at work. The laptops were pieces of junk. The lcd panels kept cracking at the hinges. Every one of them had screws fall out of the bottom. The desktops were uninspired, run of the mill hardware. We get good tech support (US support) because we are a premier support site.
Replaced every laptop with an HP. Came with an AMD Turion (something Dell won’t even offer). Cases are nice alloy cases, not cheap plastic. In process of doing the same with the desktops. Again, I have the option of AMD64 processors or Intel Pentium D from HP. Same type of support too. No “Hello, my name is Sanjay. How may I be helping you?”
The servers are in process. There’s only two Dell’s left and they’ll be gone by end of year.

That’s good to know, because I am DYING for a laptop but keep hesitating because I hate to plunk down a ton of money that I really don’t have on something I’m gonna hate. Who needs the hassle?
And I was looking at Dell laptops, in particular. Now I’ve gotta look elsewhere.

I’m setting with my orig Dell D-500 I got in 2000 when I came out of the stone age. Over the 6 years I’ve had it I had 3 replaced CD Roms and the motherboard. Hoe Vey all under waranty. Lucky for me. I had a 3 year I bought at the time on sale for $99. Sure glad I took it. It’s been OK but as my budget permits I’m going for something completely different.
I think most of these places including Bellsouth in my area (S.FL) outsorce to India, South America and I just got the Philipines the other day. For-ged-aboud-it.
Which just reminded me of something. Why don’t we make a deal with the Mafia to handle these Jihad-tards?

Get one of the new HP/Compaq laptops with the AMD Turion X2. Get it with a Gig of RAM (or more) and the Brightview screen. The HP’s that I purchased for work are suh-weet. They are the business line of laptops (nx6125). I’ve had them for several months now and they’ve been champs. The only thing I didn’t get was the Brightview screen, a lesson learned. Get the Brightview screen.

Actually I have only good things to say about my Dell Inspiron 6000. It’s almost two years old and I’ve only had one problem with it. The power cable went out and Dell replaced it promptly. Other than that I’ve had no issues at all and I’ve been really rough on this thing. It’s my primary computer and I use it outside all the time. I’ve even dropped it. Twice. My next notebook will be a Dell.

Oh and my battery isn’t on the recall list so even this problem hasn’t affected me. Maybe I’ve just been lucky. :mrgreen:

I have found that no matter what, laptop batteries just don’t last. My laptop battery was so bad that I literally couldn’t unplug it from the a/c. I tried a lot of “tricks” to avoid spending the money on a new battery but none of them really worked. I tried a website called http://www.laptopsforless.com/laptopbattery and I was really pleased. I got a brand new battery for a really affordable price and it works great. I know that some people are skeptical about such sites but I had a good experience and would recommend them to others.
