One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind

I wish I had posted this earlier today, but I was otherwise occupied. July 20, 1969 - a day that I think is one of the most amazing days in American (if not world) history. I was only 2-1/2 years old then, but thankfully my mother made me watch it and drilled into my head how important it was. I remember it (I also remember snips of other things at that age, but nothing quite so clearly). I remember sitting on the floor in front of the TV with a blue velour-ish/velvety blanket, and staring at the TV thinking “remember this!” Anyway, this is a perfect opportunity for me to indulge my love for this. This first one is Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the lunar surface, with the famous “One Small Step” comment. The second is Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin deploying the US flag. I can’t imagine how anyone could watch this and not be filled with awe and pride in America and mankind itself. Words can’t do it justice!

I was almost 10 years old… sitting on the living room floor watching TV with mom and my sister. Dad was at work. It was in the evening, mom let us stay up and watch it.
We lived in Huntsville Alabama. Dad worked for Brown Engineering, Werner von Braun’s company. He insisted on the “Americanized” spelling.
I met Dr. von Braun but I don’t remember it. I was there when he and many of his associates became citizens. I also met Gus Grissom when I was like, 6. I remember him.
It was an amazing time, and an amazing accomplishment. You have more computing power in your car than everything we used to get to the moon.

I was 6 at the time, but clearly remember watching them step out of the LM on our 13 channel 19 inch black and white motorola TV like it was yesterday.
Armstrong visited our school in Bellwood, Il. a few months after that, we were awed beyond words, I think the teacher asked all the questions ’cause we were speechless.
