I know, some of you are saying “who’s that?” You suck.
Syd Barrett, the original frontman of Pink Floyd who wrote much of their early material, died July 7th in Cambridge, England, from complications related to diabetes. He was sixty.
Born Roger Keith Barrett in Cambridge, the son of a renowned pathologist, Barrett changed his name to Syd at age fifteen in honor of local drummer Sid Barrett. In 1965 he joined up with bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright in a new band Barrett dubbed Pink Floyd — in honor of blues artists Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Barrett quickly became the group’s primary songwriter and guitarist, composing their breakthrough singles “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play.”

Rest in peace, you crazy diamond.
Found this on YouTube - a “tribute” to Pink Floyd, with Wish You Were Here as the music, which is appropriate since it was written for Syd Barrett:

Syd is gone…
I was not a big fan of the Syd era of Pink Floyd, the Waters albums are my favorites, but Floyd would not have been Floyd without the early influence of Syd.
RIP Syd…

The death of Syd struck a chord with me and my mid-month podcast at The Best Radio You Have Never Heard (http://www.bestradiopodcast.com) is a tribute to the great rock visionary.
“Here To Do My Parts” is a tribute to Syd Barrett. Even though of course there is some Pink Floyd music in the show, it is more of a tribute to Syd’s vision. I like to think of it as traveling music for Syd’s iPod as he makes the trek to the Gates of Dawn, or perhaps some gardening music for the great beyond as, in his recent past, gardening was one of Syd’s few hobbies.
Have a listen and let me know what you think.
