My Two Cents on Polipundit and related matters
Beth has spoken eloquently and passionately about Polipundit’s amazing decision to boot all his co-writers out for daring to hold a different opinion than his own.
A writer I like wrote that the blogosphere has become a ‘pointless virtual ass-grab’. I didn’t agree at the time, but it’s a lovely turn-of-phrase.
Maybe he’s right. The entire right side of the blogosphere is noisily descending into self-parody.
Immigration absolutism fuelled by loudmouthed sanctimonious know-it-alls on the internets is in danger of becoming to the right what National Security is to the left. Deporting 11 million people? Is there a serious person that thinks we can do it, even if we choose to? This is idiocy on a scale that’s difficult to fathom.
Polipundit speaks as a legal immigrant, as do I. He speaks as one who believes those who wait in line should get priority, as do I. He speaks in favor of a fence, as do I. He speaks as somebody who wishes to ensure that America assimilates Immigrantss not vice versa, as do I.
President Bush spoke to ALL those issues and a few more last night. He’s proposing a policy grounded in reality.
We are in danger of succumbing to promoting policies grounded in fantasy (if you wish hard enough they’ll all go back to Guadalajara), that are self-defeating and often, IMHO, racist. Deporting 11 million people, most of whom work hard and contribute to society, is an impossible and dangerous pipe dream. The lack of seriousness amongst those that promote such a policy renders their websites off-limits to me for the forseeable future. They won’t care, but hopefully I won’t be alone.
Our side needs to get a farking grip, and quickly.

Martin, I agree with almost everything you wrote.
I think we can secure the border without a physical fence. IMO, electronic surveillance would be more effective and would not harm the fragile desert ecology. Pronghorn antelope, Mexican jaguar, and javelina as well as numerous smaller animals would be threatened by a 10 foot wall.
I don’t understand conservative objections to a guest worker program. These Mexican folks want to work, they are already familiar with employers. Contrary to the assertions of some, they are law-abiding good folks who embrace the family values we hold dear.
Who will do the work Mexicans are doing if we could somehow deport them? We had a good view of our unemployed citizens last September. Does anyone believe those folks at the New Orleans convention center are going to mow our lawns or cook our food or roof our homes?

Deporting 11-20 million is not the problem. . . importing up to 100 million may prove to be.

And John, your strawman is showing. I cook my own food and mow my own lawn. The last time I needed my roof replaced it was done my three young Mennonites.

Well, you know I agree with you 100%. So you’re not fired. HAHAHA
And as usual, you’ve said it more clearly than I have. ;-)

Volume 2, Carnival of WIJF: Bush’s immigration speech round-up
A quick survey of what conservative (and semi-conservative) bloggers have to say about yesterday’s speech by President Bush. There seems to be a common theme underlying most of the responses, but I will do my best to make this edition of the Carnival …

Forgot to add Cox and Forkum’s as well. They do a good job of sizing up how Americans feel - split.

I’m of the perspective that the liberals and conservatives take turns descending into self-parody within the sphere. This too shall pass.
