The drug that Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.) said he took to treat an inflamed stomach is commonly used to control the nausea from prescription painkillers and rarely used for stomach ailments, experts said Friday.
Phenergan is also sometimes used by drug abusers to enhance their highs from opium-derived painkillers, such as OxyContin and Vicodin, said Dr. Bankole Johnson, an addiction expert at the University of Virginia.
The whole pathetic story stinks to high heaven. And I am amazed the LA Times is covering it this way!
Johnson said using it to quell the nausea of gastroenteritis, sometimes called stomach flu, is virtually unheard of. “It would be like using morphine to treat a paper cut,” he said.
Oops. Not very credible is it?

That’s weird that the doc would say that about Phenergan. Unheard of? My daughter was given that before, when she was a baby and had a stomach virus. I’ve had it too for the same thing. But it DOES knock you on your ass; it’s a guaranteed long nap, if nothing else. Maybe it’s not used much lately, but used to be. Hmmm.

Not defending Kennedy in the least (I do think the story is suspect) but I recently got out of the hospital and two of the three drugs prescribed when I was released were Vicodin and Phenegran. I can say that Phenegran mixed with the Vicodin…well let’s just say that it was a nice, relaxing couple of weeks. At least I think it was nice and relaxing, mostly it’s all a blur. The Phenegran wasn’t for the flu this time but like Beth and The Princess I’ve had it prescribed to me for flu related nausea before.

I agree with commenter number one… I too am taking Phenergan and I think its very odd that they are describing it as such. I’m pregnant so I need it to combat nasuea, but I agree too- It knocks you out! The first time I took it, I had to call my husband to pick me up from my mothers house because I didn’t want to drive… Not defending him, just saying its possible. He’s still an idiot though…I hope they find some way to prosecute him.

I do have to point out that I was smart enough not to drive during the time I was on the medication. Trust me, the stuff knocked me for a loop and I knew better! But of course maybe my tolerance level for drugs is lower than Mr. Kennedy’s. :roll:

The ONLY reason I’ve sold oral-dose phenergan on the street is for nausea; but it does help the high if you chase a good hit of IV dilaudid with a 25 mg bolus of phenergan, too…or, um, so i’ve heard.

Thank God I’m in the 2nd district, so this sob isn’t my rep. Its the eldery poor who couldn’t afford to move to Florida of their smarter peers and the Portuguese immigrant communites from the Azors (who demand and get treated as a Minority and not as Caucasions) that elect him in the 1st district. Perhaps this will allow a liberal republican get elected, but since Patty boy gets so many red-states annoyed and thus vote GOP, keeping him in the House might be a patriotic duty.
