Moussaoui - Life in Prison (with updates about ADX Florence)

OK, let’s hope he gets some prison justice. Make him suffer. Death is too easy a way out for subhuman scum like him.
WTF? The press conference–I’m gonna throw up. “Mitigating factors” like a difficult childhood. Give me a break. Plenty of people have childhoods worse than he did but DO NOT end up terrorists. Whatthefarkever. Anyway, so he gets to live. Unlike thousands of others whose blood is on his hands. Fine. Prison justice. He’d better not be able to communicate with ANYONE. Prisons are full of the easily-converted to the Religion of Peaceâ„¢ already, and if he’s allowed to have a “captive” audience…well…you can figure it out.
UPDATE: Honestly, his execution would have been WAY too humane anyway. I mean really, people are saying these days that lethal injection is cruel and unusual! He doesn’t deserve to die peacefully. Maybe if they skinned him alive and drowned him in a vat of boiling acid pig’s blood, or buried him alive or something. I don’t know, maybe we can have fun imagining an appropriate method of execution for him. See? The not-cruel-and-unusual death penalty would be wasted on him.
Jeffrey Dahmer and that “priest” John Geoghan got prison justice, I just hope this waste of biological matter will too. I wonder how long it takes before people start taking up a collection to pay some other prisoner or a guard to “take care of it.”
Not that I would ever think of doing something like that, of course.
Rusty’s pissed, and he’s got a roundup of reaction. For the record, I don’t find the “martyr” argument compelling at all. For all we know, that idea may have been put out there to save his life (although the jury said that was not a mitigating factor–but who really knows). Allah has more.
UPDATE 2: He’s going to be at ADX Florence, in Colorado. Look at this list of inmates. It looks like he’ll be there among friends, the lucky guy! (OK, I know, it’s a “supermax” facility.) Here’s an undoubtedly exaggerated description of Florence from some bedwetting bleeding-hearts. And more bedwetters, listed by Jeralyn Merritt. More about ADX Florence here. Short version: “human” (but not victims’) rights and “prisoner rights” (ha!) groups hate this place. Good. I hope it’s at least as bad as they say it is. And look–prison justice apparently does exist there.
A maximum-security federal prison known for housing the “worst of the worst” of the nation’s criminals is looking into the apparent beating death of a 64-year-old inmate.
Fellow prisoners at the ADX facility near Florence, often called “Supermax,” allegedly attacked Manuel Torrez at the prison Thursday morning.
Prison staff and medical personnel tried for about 20 minutes to resuscitate Torrez, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman says Torrez endured a “vicious” beating, suffering severe injuries to his face, neck and chest.
It’s the first alleged killing of a prisoner at the hands of other inmates in Supermax history.
Prison spokeswoman Wendy Montgomery declined comment.
From this pro-prisoner site:
In November of 1994 the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) opened a new maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado. Modeled after Marion, the Administrative Maximum Unit Prison (ADX) in Florence intensifies the repressive techniques of isolation and sensory deprivation. As at Marion, prisoners are forced to eat, sleep, and defecate in their cells and are allowed out of their cells for an extremely limited amount of time. In D, F, and G units (considered general population), out-of-cell time is a total of nine hours a week — three times a week for three hours with one other person. The lighting is designed to prohibit sunlight: a slit 3 inches wide and 3 feet long facing a wall or rec yard and a florescent light strip provide the only illumination. The furniture is gray concrete built into white walls with drab green trim. The cells are sealed off with two steel doors, one barred, and the other solid steel. This steel and cement cage prohibits any communication between prisoners. Even contact with prison officials is limited. ADX Florence is designed so that one guard can control the movements of numerous prisoners in several cell blocks by way of electronic doors, cameras and audio equipment. “These guys will never be out of their cells, much less in the yard or anywhere around here,” says Russ Martin, the project manager for the Florence prison. Puerto Rican Prisoner of War Oscar Lopez Rivera states that “isolation is perfected here, both in the structure of the cell and in the very limited communication. People don’t realize the value of human intercourse until it’s denied.”
The psychological effects of isolation are extremely detrimental. As early as 1890, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that extended solitary confinement was “infamous punishment” and causes severe mental impairment. The American Journal of Psychiatry reported that hallucinations, anxiety attacks, problems with impulse control, and self-mutilation can result from solitary confinement. Even the U.S. Congress admitted in 1985 and 1990 they were concerned about the amount of time prisoners were spending in their cells. Prisoners at Marion have reported that isolation encourages more anger and rage, resulting in less self-control and more violence. Prison officials may choose to ignore the harmful effects of isolation and sensory deprivation. However, 90% of these prisoners will ultimately be released from prison. Political prisoner (?) Ray Levasseur says, “If I lock you up in your bathroom for 22 hours a day,” you’re not going to get into too much trouble. But when they let you out, you’re going to get into trouble you would never have seen before. I have never met anyone who’s been exposed to isolation and abuse whose attitude didn’t harden.”
ADX Florence has technologically perfected the Marion tradition of behavior modification. Strip searches, metal detectors and constant video surveillance are common practice at Florence. Excessive and humiliating, these control methods serve only as intimidation techniques. Oscar Lopez Rivera reports that initially strip searches, accompanied by painful probes, were almost a daily, routine part of the program, as was sleep deprivation. “In three weeks I hadn’t slept one single night without being awakened every hour on the hour” wrote Oscar. (This has changed, at least for now, as the result of a successful political campaign.)
Again, exercise some skepticism, considering the source. Apparently they’re not THAT isolated, if two inmates managed to beat Manuel Torrez to death. We’ll see.
UPDATE 3: I think Daveed Gartenstein-Ross at the Counterterrorism Blog has it right:
As Moussaoui left the courtroom today, he defiantly stated, “America, you lost. I won.” But whether or not he received the death penalty, we could expect this kind of bluster from Moussaoui. What speaks louder than these words are his actions during the sentencing phase — actions that scream out a desire for martyrdom. Did America lose in this case? In my opinion, it did not.
And remember, these nutcases will declare victory no matter what the circumstances. Remember Saddam? Remember the rest of these Islamofascists? It’s standard operating procedure.

[...] I’ll be blunt: Moussaoui wants attention. The man is a meglomaniac. A sentence of death will ensure that Moussaoui gets plenty of attention. A sentence of life in prison denies him that – the prison he’s going to is one of America’s most secure SuperMax prisons. Unfortunately, he won’t see any other inmates (so they could dispatch him), few guards, and irregular,

and likely will go insane from the solitary existence.
