The South Park Mohammed Censorship

Stephen Spruiell at NRO’s Media Blog:
I just got off the phone with a Comedy Central spokesman. I asked him about last night’s episode of South Park in which, at a moment right before the prophet Mohammed was supposed to make a cameo, the words, “Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Mohammed on their network” appeared on the screen.
I asked him whether this truly was Comedy Central’s decision or whether this was just another gag (with South Park, you never know). He said:
They reflected it accurately. That was a Comedy Central decision.
Just in case there was any confusion, that settles it. Comedy Central censored the image.
Dumbass dhimmis. They’ve actually HAD the lunatic Mohammed on South Park before, anyway, in the Super Best Friends episode (see it here).
So, when when exactly did we surrender in this war? It was OK before, but was the refusal of the US press to show the Jyllands Posten Mohammed cartoons the end of our independence and freedom?
More from Spruiell here as well. See also Michelle Malkin for a comprehensive roundup and a downloadable video of the episode. She’s also (sort of?) soliciting new Comedy Central logos.
Here it is from YouTube:
So anyway, here’s the South Park Mohammed that I just whipped together. More to follow, probably. They think the Jyllands Posten cartoons were offensive? And South Park? Heh. I hear Tubgirl needs some reading material.

You bring up an excellent point about when we decided to cave into restrictions of our freedom of speech and freedom of expression and link the Danish cartoons.
If there were no Danish cartoons, would Comedy Central still feel it would have been necessary to censor ‘South Park’?
I don’t think they would based upon Mohammed being in a previous episode. Therefore I think the answer is that even though Danish cartoons were published as a rebuke to self-censorship, the failure of media organizations around the world to display even one of those when talking about the story (naturally it would have given the entire story actual context) gave Comedy Central and excuse to censor. So essentially, the very vessles of freedom of speech surrendered this past February and those who hate that freedom won.

Mohammed is actually in the last card of the opening sequence of the episode.

I love Southpark, but I dislike Comedy Central. I do not like The Daily Show!! I am also a Right Wing Conspirator and am happy to see your blog!!

I don’t really belong here (hint: I love “The Daily Show”) but it nice to see an issue that all sides of the American political spectrum can get behind. There is a reason it is the First Amendment – it could be quite a unifying issue…

Islam forbids depictions of Mohammed. Christianity (with exceptions for certain denominations) does not have the same ban on pictures of Jesus. Yes, the image Jesus was offensive, but the idea behind not showing Mohammed has nothing to do with whether the pictures are offensive or not.
I’m not saying the pictures of Jesus were ok, but I am saying it’s a seperate issue than the Mohammed censorship. What I see coming from the Comedy Central controversy is essentially, it’s ok to make fun of religions, but it’s not ok to purposefully do what the religion bans. Words vs. actions.

Another possibility:
Comedy Central may be lying through their teeth; when I watched that episode and saw the black screen, my roommate and I cracked up. It seemed a natural part of the episode, and was hilarious. I’m guessing Comedy Central did this on purpose, and is claiming it was censorship just to garner controversy and attention. Jon Stewart, if I recall correctly, showed some of the real cartoons on his show. Why would they censor one of their shows but not another?

Um… I’m pretty sure the Catholic church frowns upon depictions of Jesus dancing around and defecating on people.
I’m pretty sure they also don’t like photos of crucifixes dunked in jars of urine, or images of the madonna smeared with elephant dung (which the media had no problem with in the past).
This has nothing to do with sensitivity. They themselves have said it is from fear of violence.
