Someone’s done my work for me

I guess my laziness and occasional absent-mindedness are no secret, but I’ve “been meaning to” (how many times have I used that phrase?) write something like this. If you write anything–letters, a blog, comments, whatever–you need to read this. At the very least, bloggers need to read it just to save my sanity. PLEASE. I can’t tell you how many blogs I’ve seen where the writing is so bad it’s embarrassing to read it. You know when someone does something embarrassing and you have to pretend you didn’t notice it? Yeah. That describes some blogs. You probably know which ones I mean, too. Needless to say, I don’t read them.

Anyway, this guy actually writes for a living, so read it. Learn it. Live it. PLEASE.

I was reading through the comments a little and caught this:

“For instance, it won’t correct you when you search for ‘alright,’ and rightly so, because everyone uses it.” (reference to another comment –ed.)

I don’t. That’s one of my “you lose 5 apparent IQ points” words. Actually, it should be one of the “10 IQ point” words, because it’s a common enough phrase that there’s no excuse not to spell it correctly, Google notwithstanding. It’s like using “nite” for “night” (which Google doesn’t catch, either — clearly Google should be used for less-common words).

THANK YOU. “Alright” drives me batshi’ite crazy. I forgot to include that one in my previous Grammar/Spelling Nazi posts. I’m just going to leave this as is, though, because I could all too easily end up with another Grammar/Spelling Nazi post.

It’s great to see you mentioning that. I just finished an intensive two day grammar course by an excellent federal consultant and was pleased at how much I still remembered.
If you ever have the time, Strictly Speaking by Edwin Newman is a great read!

Yeah, “Whatever” is the perfect name for the blog.

Don’t trust the handy dandy dictionary either because alright is in there along with irregardless. And what is wrong with “right so”? Lord, I probably didn’t use the quotation marks correctly, here, either. and

“Blogs” Web Logs began as a way for ANYONE to be able to say what they want - if you are a good writer or educated in good grammar - more power to you - you may be read more (content often overrides “ole betties” and “Harper Valley PTA” type whiners [thought we got rid of the neighborhood gossips?!?!] - hard up for something to post).

As you say - if the reading isn’t smooth enough for you - don’t stop.

HOWEVER - it has also been stated to be bad “blogdum” manners to drag someone’s mistakes to the public if you have not taken the time to complain to the perp!

Even then - the “writer” you use/abuse here will find out as readership declines - tacky, tacky, tacky. There are people out there just typing in order to relieve stress, share and meet people - not to make money or meet professional (yours or our) standards.

This is the PURE type of “Free Speech” our country fights for us to own everyday. SO - if you whine to embarrass others and create mammoth numbers for yourself and maybe your wallet - expect to be criticized.

Glad to know someone received a PHD! ;-D You know you are good at this - relax - you don’t get better by tearing down efforts of others “Baby Girl!”

I proudly guarantee imperfection when I post - shows I didn’t copy it from someone else and I was thinking “FREELY!”
