WMD found in Iraq…uh…wait…

It seems they finally found some chemical weapons in Iraq. la Repubblica reports something in Italian about how we used this “white phosphorus” on innocent people in Iraq. And phosphorous is a chemical, thus the US was using chemical weapons on the innocent citizens of Iraq.
Got it?
I like how BNP says it: Italian TV Goes Off The Deep End. Cause it’s true, you know. Good grief, next thing you know they’ll have another scoop on another American chemical super-weapon: injecting toxic lead capsules into the bodies of enemies through a secret technology codenamed “guns.” (thanks Ace)
Gotta love it when people spend so much time trying to find new reasons to hate America. Sure would hate to blame, you know, Terrorists, or something. I guess some people don’t mind that everybody says they are liars.

dingo says:
I don’t read Italian, so I am confused. Unless you are holding a very large lit fire cracker in your hand, white phosphorus is fairly harmless. It is only if you mix it with water or have one of the PClx compounds is it toxic. Do you have any more info on this?
MCPO Airdale says:
If Massey was still subject to the UCMJ, I would love to sit on his Courts-Martial.
MacStansbury says:
they are just talking about post-impact burns for all that I can tell. the kind if you were in the splash that you’d see. normal stuff. it’s just that reporters don’t know enough about how the shells work to realize that you get powder burns off of it.
Clay says:
White phosphorus is used in artillery and mortar rounds to create quick smoke and to set things on fire. The rounds are commonly called WP or Willy Pete by soldiers. White phosphorus burns on contact with oxygen, when soldiers have it on them they have to cut off oxygen by covering the wound with something or immersing it in water. I’ve been told that the remove it in the hospital by submerging the wound in water.
The Geneva Convention prohibits use of white phophorus against people. However it can be used legally against equipment. So, if the enemy is riding in a vehicle you can use WP against the vehicle but not against the enemy soldiers.
GD says:
Watch the video (in English).
RodoMXOZ says:
White phosphorus sure is a dual technology. It has been accepted that it was used and that it is a hazardous chemical that can burn people alive. Now… considering the other scandals the US has had in Iraq, I tend to doubt that it was used purely as a light source.
You can read more about it here: http://newsalamexicana.blogspot.com/2005/11/us-used-chemical-weapons-in-iraq-war.html
Dora Mia says:
Yes, it’s a dual use weapon, ideal for flushing people from foxholes or trenches. Shake and bake, I think we used to call it. Nothing helps let the air out of a potential insurgency like burning the children in their beds. The US has committed to torture and total war, and I pray that we won’t reap what we have sown here.
Dora Mia says:
By the way, when you find a totaly innocent 6 year old “terrorist” burned to death, what would you as a parent do? I hope you would forgive the US. There was no reason to use WP, and immoral doesn’t begin to describe it. Is this the way Christ wants us to behave? Using indiscriminate weapons in civilian areas?
MacStansbury says:
how pathetic. how truly pathetic you dragging your own idea of what Christ would want.
Christ would want children murdered in the streets
Christ would want tyrants to rape and torture women
Christ would want entire peoples wiped out because they aren’t His religion
your lies make me sick. it’s pathetic that you tell me what Christ thinks. you encourage the rapists, the murderers, and the evil, and then you tell ME that you’re on the side of Christ.
get your facts strait. quit your lies, your lies, your lies. I won’t respond to your lies, because they are so…as we keep seeing…weak talking point lies.
the next time you use my God’s name in vein, as you just did, I’ll ban you.
Dora Mia says:
Wow. Way to turn the other cheek. Shouldn’t we take the high ground? Must we sink to the level of our enemies? Tell me, what is your interpretation of what Christ would want you to do? We are to forgive. An eye for an eye was in the old testement, not the new. PS. it’s VAIN. and i did not use it in VAIN. Be reasonable, humble, and reread.
Dora Mia says:
I also think that we should publicly renounce torturing people to death. If it’s wrong when others do it, then I agree with former P.O.W.s
We shouldn’t do it either.

MacStansbury says:
baby, you don’t know me, obviously, but I misspell words on purpose. I was wondering if I should give you something with which to impugn my character. you took the bait. nice. way to take the high road.
and I defy you to find where, before 1611, the phrase “turn the other cheek” was uttered by Jesus. He didn’t. that was merely something the translators put in there to explain it in a way the Europeans would understand, chivalry. what that whole passage you’re pull-quoting from Jesus was just a way to act when people are attacking your character.
but don’t let what Jesus really said get in the way of what you want to believe.
you’ve show compassion for terrorists, a hatred for Americans, and an unwillingness to understand the concepts of warfare (tip: we can’t shoot terrorists in non-civilian areas if they won’t leave the civilian areas. that’s kind of the point in the terrorists staying in civilian areas). I was upset with you at first. now I’m not even going to worry about you.
(another tip: when we start cutting off civilian’s heads and broadcasting it on the internet, then we’ll talk about torturing)
Dora Mia says:
Silly, I didn’t impugn your character at all. All I asked was that you be reasonable humble and re-read. I have compassion for the innocent victims of this war, the children. I love America, and served for four years honorably in the armed forces as an infantryman. I learned that you can shoot a terrorist in a civilian area the same way a policeman can shoot an armed suspect, with a pistol or a rifle or a shotgun. Not with an incendiary round launched from a mortar. As for being a baby? I was on m60 duty because of my size. and because I was an 18 year old volunteer.
Dora Mia says:
By the way, MacStansbury, I’m absolutely FOR this war. 100% for it. I think that we are doing great things in Iraq. I just don’t like the use of torture and indiscriminant weapons in civilian areas. That’s total war, and that’s beneath us.
Dora Mia says:
MacStansbury, this bothers me. You see, it’s not some wacko left wing Italian news outlet saying this, it was the army that said it first.
Quoting the US Army’s “Field Artillery Magazine” :
http://sill-www.army.mil/FAMAG/Previous_Editions/05/mar-apr05/PAGE24-30.pdf
“The munitions we brought to this fight were . . . illumination and white phosphorous (WP, M110 and M825), with point-detonating (PD), delay, time and variable-time (VT) fuzes.”
“WP proved to be an effective and versatile munition. We used it for screening missions at two breeches and, later in the fight, as a potent psychological weapon against the insurgents in trench lines and spider holes when we could not get effects on them with HE.”
This is further confirmed in a news article by an embedded journalist at the time. See
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004/04/11/military/iraq/19_30_504_10_04.txt
“Bogert is a mortar team leader who directed his men to fire round after round of high explosives and white phosphorus charges into the city Friday and Saturday, never knowing what the targets were or what damage the resulting explosions caused. . . they ran through the drill again and again, sending a mixture of burning white phosphorus and high explosives they call “shake ‘n’ bake” into a cluster of buildings where insurgents have been spotted all week.”
This directly contradicts recent statements made by the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as a previous statement by the US State Department — located at
http://usinfo.state.gov/media/Archive_Index/Illegal_Weapons_in_Fallujah.html — that WP was used “very sparingly in Fallujah, for illumination purposes”.
Illuminating with with point-detonating fuses in a city?, that does not make se
nse.
MacStansbury says:
thank you for playing our game.
you’ve just gone and pulled out EVERY SINGLE DEMOCRAT TALKING POINT.
all debunked.
but keep going.
oh, and you’re the second “former military” in past three days who’s shown up here, and yet to prove they were ever in the military. the burden of proof is on you.
Dora Mia says:
:roll:Whadaya want? a scanned copy of my DD214?
As for “debunked”, how? Please just do as I have and site reputable sources. And please stop attacking me and mischaracterizing what I have said.
“you’ve show compassion for terrorists, a hatred for Americans, and an unwillingness to understand the concepts of warfare ”
I read your blog, and I really liked it. Well reasoned, great sense of humor. Here you break out the shrill invective and the ad hominem attacks.
And that’s beneath you.
Dora Mia says:
MacStansbury, this isn’t about left or right.
This is about wrong or right. My politics are probably to the right of yours. I have voted repulican straight ticket since I was 18. I just want to know the truth, and I think it’s the moral duty of Americans to check on all our leaders, and not follow blindly. I was lied to when I was in the military, but accepted that I didn’t need to know. Now I think we all need to know. I want our troops to install a Democracy in Iraq, and am Proud of all they have and will accomplish. I wondered aloud why we hadn’t gone to war sooner. I am a vocal supporter of the war. But not this one incident. This shouldn’t have happened. We all make mistakes. It’s all about admitting it and moving on that makes us men.
RTO Trainer says:
Why would you expect the Dept. of State to be completely accurate about military matters? ANd since when does the DepState speak for the DepDef?
They were wrong. Heres the correct link: http://usinfo.state.gov/media/Archive_Index/Illegal_Weapons_in_Fallujah.html
The only clearly wrong point, however, is that WP is used for illumination.
There is no evidence to date that WP was used indiscrimiately, or that it was used to deliberately engage or target civilians. Until such evidence comes to light, no foul.
Dora Mia says:
Thanks RTO trainer.
I appreciate your point about dept of state. I appreciate the civil discourse. And mostly, I wanted to be wrong. I believe in the grunts on the ground, and would not fault the people in the field even if they did this ( which, as I look about I admit is unclear). All you have to see is one of your buddies hurt, and you circle the wagons. I miss that feeling. I am glad we won this war, and we need to be proud of our accomplishments. Even the peace will turn around, if the gutless don’t get us down. I just want it to be a peace we can be proud of. We are not perfect, but our standards are the highest.
