PETITION: Kofi Annan Must Go!
From the Center for Individual Freedom:
Dear Speaker Hastert and Majority Leader Frist:
American taxpayers provide 22% of the U.N.’s operating budget plus billions more for peacekeeping and other efforts. That’s more than $3 billion per year. Meanwhile, Secretary General Kofi Annan is presiding over the most corrupt U.N. administration in history. He has failed to advance the cause of peace and security. He has been an impediment to the War on Terror. And, U.S. taxpayer dollars are being wasted on a U.N. bureaucracy that opposes American interests at every turn. As Senator Norm Coleman, Chairman of the Senate committee investigating the Oil for Food scandal, wrote recently, “It’s time for Kofi Annan to step down. The massive scope of this debacle demands nothing less.”
Charges of corruption, mismanagement, nepotism and abuse are swirling around U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and many of his senior aides. The United Nations is rife with scandal at all levels. Charges against senior U.N. leaders range from embarrassing to criminal.
• Kofi Annan’s own deputy has been implicated in the Oil for Food scandal and stands accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes from Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
• Kofi Annan has personally stonewalled Congressional investigations into the Oil for Food scandal.
• U.N. peacekeepers and employees have committed sickening acts of sexual abuse on the very people that they were sent to help and protect, even threatening to withhold food in exchange for sex.
• The U.N. official in charge of ferreting out corruption at the world body has been accused of corruption himself.
• Thanks to U.N. mismanagement, Saddam Hussein illegally pocketed more than $20 billion through the corrupt Oil for Food program. Money which was supposed to help the people of Iraq was instead spent on guns and bullets that were used against our troops.
As American taxpayers, we demand accountability for our hard-earned dollars. And we won’t get it so long as Kofi Annan remains Secretary General.
As a result, we, the undersigned, urge Congress to withhold America’s U.N. contribution until Kofi Annan resigns his post.
